  • RobotKarate's build

So, I'm finally getting around to actually installing some of the parts I've collected for this thing since I bought it earlier this year. My goal is to make it a quick and great handling sleeper for the street and also as a learning tool for all things tuning.

    Capri xr2 donor car:

The garage is small and is more of a workshop. It's much more clean and organized now!

    Bye bye xr2:

To be fair, the xr2 was kept in a trailer barn, dirty and faded and a lot of the plastics and switches etc. were in too poor condition to salvage it as a whole car. The perfect donor essentially.

The Capri had the short nose crank so I found a long nose Miata engine:

Advanced suspension before slotting the fronts and grinding the rears:

Aspire rear spindles before and after threading:

'04 Rio calipers compared to Festiva calipers:

Front coilovers, '04 Rio knuckles and big brakes installed:

    Old stuff:

Front's are done, rear beam is out and anticipating the instillation of an Aspire setup after I rebuild the rear wheel bearings:

    BMW bottle caps:

Trying to get it back on the ground this week, then, after dialing it all in I'll move to the engine rebuild process. I'll try to get better at taking more pics of the process, it just kinda slows me down when I'm working solo.

Your building pretty much exactly the same car as me, just got started on my suspension tear down last week, engine swap is scheduled for next year. Looks great!

Thanks! I'm really looking forward to driving it with this suspension and brake setup. Oh yeah, if anyone is going to run the bottle cap wheels, these lug nuts worked:

Got it back on the ground last week:

Going to try and dial in the alignment before Thanksgiving so I can drive it to Florida when I see my folks. Waiting until after that to get the machine work done on the B6T.

Nice looking car. I have been following your build as my time permits but I missed the details on your wheel/tire combination. I see they are the BMW bottle cap style. What is the size of the wheels and tires?
              Thanks in advance!
'88 Festiva LX 5 speed, A/C, Carb, restored $$$ body paint, badly wrecked @ 200k.
'93 Festiva L, 5 speed, Aqua, bought from the original owner,.Zero rust but very nasty otherwise. Awaits the B6T.
'91 Festiva L, 5 speed, bought to drive while putting the B6T in the '93. now B6ME powered.

Thanks! The four lug bottle caps are 14x6 with et35 offset. I think I got all four with center caps for something like $150 on craigslist. Tires are Achilles 165/55-14, they have a nice slight stretch to them with this wheel, I'll take a pic when I get home this evening. Not a bad combo for around $350 imo.

The cool thing about the bottle caps is that the BMW guys don't want them, they want the basket weaves which are 14x6.5 with et30 offset. They look cool but they sell for like $600.

ive been sitting on bottle caps that I got for real cheap but not as nice as yours. I'm going the adapter route as I cant find an aspire to swap to 4x100, cant wait now that I see them on yours.

I don't see why you'd have to go with adapters in the front when there are Kia Rios by the dozen in the scrapyards. You'll get big ass brakes in the front, then just buy new drums for the rear and have them redrilled for 4x100. Honestly, that's probably the best setup for this car.

I love your build, i've been planning on pretty much the same build even down to the bmw bottle cap rims! There are no aspires left in the junk yards around here. So i have decided to use the stock rear drums and redrill them. I have searched the fourms and only come up with dead links to redrilling the drums... Any place i can look? Also is there a place that consistently sells the drums with a smooth backside? Or is it trial and error?

I'm sure any proficient machine shop can answer those questions. Just call them and tell them what you want to do.
