  • Posi-traction, Festiva

Does anybody know if you can posi-trac or lock axles on a Festiva to get both wheels pulling? Air locker maybe? (not wanting phantom grip)

I have seen these things for sale called "phantom grip" that fit into the diff unit, but trans has to come apart and some machining has to be done. I have no experience with these-other than seeing them for sale. Maybe someone on the site knows more?

Spider gears could be welded up. But you wouldn't be able to turn without breaking something.

Mazda (actually the performance division, MazdaSpeed) makes a limited slip differential for the G series transmission (F series too), but it's hard to get. Quaife makes one for the G series also. It runs around $1000 + though.

Properly set up, the Phantom Grip is pretty good.

Welded spider gears will work, but on each turn, the inside tire will spin (it would eat tires real fast) and there is the chance of breakage every time you do anything but go straight. It would be like an old school RWD spool.

Mfactory makes 26 spline G series helical gear type lsd for arund $700, its equal to a quafie unit but the trans doesnt need to be modified or custom axles like you would need for the quafie unit.

^ Thanks! $700 isnt to bad. What about airlockers? Any made that would fit Festiva's? A friend of mine and I both had 1980 Broncos. He had airlockers on his.
Wow! Was all I could say when I drove his bronco. What a difference. All 4 wheels pullin' in the mud and turned off, drove normal on roads and turns.
Both front wheels pullin' on a festy would be sweet.

There isn't anything like that for our trans. I've never even seen a mini spool for a front wheel drive transaxle either. As simple as they are you'd think someone would make one, but guys just end up welding the spider gears.

My friend welded the spider gears in his fwd eclipse. As long as you didn't turn that sharp it was fine.

Well, i've heard good and bad about the phantom grip, sounds like its a "rig" and not strong for serious racing, as a spool or true locker. I wanted to know if a locker was available for the Festiva.
I 've seen ARB airlockers for Suzuki samurai, sidekick, vitara ...and honda and toyota. Can one of these be adapted to a Festiva?

All the civic drivers I know that have used phantom grip have broken their diffs so that's the reason why I don't want one.

theres a phantom grip in jasons, track b6t festiva i bought from him, now i dont have a really sticky tire to do a full launch on yet but with the tires he has on the car which where auto x tires, it sure doesnt seem any different with the phantom grip. im thinkging of getting another mfactory and kia trans for jasons car,

I have only heard bad things about Phantom Grip, and only positive things about Quaife or Torsen LSD's..
