Weird, what's the thing above the windshield...some sort of huge extended rear view mirror?
A lot of actual race car drivers will use those mirrors, and then remove their side mirrors. It creates less drag to not have mirrors. My mom had one in one of her Porsches way back in the day.

The mirrors may also serve as a sort of visor, I know a lot of rally drivers visor their windshields with vinyls that cover near 50% so the sun will stay out of their eyes.
