I was thinking about this today.
If you were to go 60 miles per hour 24/7. You would have to drive for 347 straight days to get to 500,000.
That is driving around the Earth approxomately 20 times.
12,500 gallons of fuel at 40 mpg.
167 3-thousand mile oil changes.
1000 boogers stuck under the drivers' seat.
And who knows what else has been done in that car.-Bryant

Hey 5.0Zone, Here is the big question - Are you at 1 cent per mile yet. Take the original price paid and divide it by your mileage. You should be very close and I'll bet that is one tough record to beat for anybody. Yeah, there are those 2.8 million mile Mercedes out there and those 1.3 milion mile Volvos, but I doubt if even come close to you as far as mileage per dollar. The reason I bring this up is because somebody brought to my attention recently that the highest mileage car in the world is a Mercedes Taxi cab in Turkey with 2.8 Million and some teacher in New Jersey has a Volvo with 1.3 million miles. My response was "at what they charge for those cars they need to go that far". Also, I'm sure you didn't spend any where as much gettting there as far as maintenance - Believe me - I have a Mercedes and even with me turning the bolts, regular maintenance can ruin your monthly budget. That is a big reason why I prefer the Festiva to my other cars. Best overall value in the marketplace. Pure, simple, reliable transportation.

roycehof,
I did the calculations a few years ago when gas was way below the $2 mark, and at that point I had spent more on gas than I had on the car, including all replacement parts cost and maintenance. And that's with the car getting 40mpg.
I don't remember the exact figure but, $7200 (new) +$60 new mudflaps + $150 cruse control + $45 floor mats + $35 fog lights + $700 replacement engine + $150 replacement transmission + $200 clutch (replaced twice) + $800 oil changes ($8 every 5000 miles) + $1400 tires/alignment ($175 per 70k miles) + $60 replaced seats + $45 replaced drivers side window + $40 replaced radiator + $75 gas tank sending unit + $20 replaced grill + $90 replaced muffler 2x + $95 replaced cat to muffler exhaust pipe + $85 replaced cat + $400 replaced stereo + $500 misc (that should cover the things I haven't remembered yet) = $12,150 total investment for 500,000+ miles
$12,150/500,000 miles = 2.43 cents per mile.
GAS
500,000 miles/40mpg = 12,500 gallons of gas
12,500gal * $1.50 (avg gas price, at one point in 1994 and 95 gas was $1/gal) = $18,750 in gas
at today's prices 12,500 * $3.20 = $40,000
WOW!!! Looks like the next 500k could be expensive!~Jeff

^^personally i would want to see how many miles can be put on an all original festiva before the engine or tranny fails
1988 323 Station Wagon - KLG4 swapped
1988 323 GT - B6T Powered
2008 Ford Escape - Rollover Survivor
1990 Festiva - First Ever Completed KLZE swap (SOLD)
If no one from the future stops you from doing it, how bad of a decision can it really be?
