They contain platinum , palladium and rhodium

Those metals can go for over $1000 an ounce

      Cat's are usually worth about $50 a peice.....they won't allways pay that....usually those who buy cat's..... buy in bulk.....aka 1000+

It's a million dollar business.....however not any easy one to get into....companys have allready got arrangments to buy from every scrapper muffler shop ect......and because they have been in business for years....they can offer a better price to the seller than somone just getting into it.

Here is a link you may find interesting.....

      Hope this answers your question!

Yep , they go for $100.00 around here (Junk) ones .

They are worth enough , that is why they started stealing them at large Airports , in the extended stay parking lot.

They use a battery powered sawzall .

yeah catalyst material is very pricey . . . the trucking industry is even looking into depleted uranium and also high platinum content by 2020

We just take ours to the humane society. They're just plain old tabbys though. I'd sell mine on ebay if i could find a vet who would reverse a spay and a neuter.

I saw that auction for that scrap cat. That is crazy. I was able to buy a NEW catalytic converter last year off eBay for under $70. We recently had in the news here that tweekers were stealing the almost new catalytic converters off of school buses and county trucks for scrap..Damn Tweekers!! :angry4: :angry5: :angry4:

Crazy! I was just reading about catalytic converters on Wikipedia before I saw this thread! It said that Most new cars only have about $50 worth of precious metals in them, but on older cars catalytic converter theft is on the rise :S

That's odd... I've heard that in PA, it's against the law to buy a used catalytic converter... IE. Are "you pull it" yards won't let you take the cats...

If it's such a crazy busines - these places should hitup the PA junkyards... Every car I've even been underneath that had the exhaust system still in tact has had the cat connected still...

Doesn't the cat make a difference on exhaust noise too?
