I've been driving sticks shifting without pressing the clutch pedal since, well, I don't know when. I've never trashed a transmission or clutch because of it. I had some mechanic in the army tell me I was going to ruin the clutch in the truck because of shifting that way. I had to quit because he was a sargeant and I wasn't. It was funny, he kept looking over to watch my feet because he couldn't tell if I was using the clutch or not. It was just too smooth. And he was too envious.

I've driven every manual transmission vehicle I've owned this way. I rarely use the clutch to shift once I'm moving. I don't look at the tach, if I even have one. Ive'put over 200k on an Aspire driving this way, with the original clutch and trans. Let the car tell you whether or not it wants to shift, don't force it. If it doesn't just slip in, blip the throttle, or use use the clutch.

A tach is not necessary. Increase RPM for down shift. Decrease RPM for upshift. Once you get used to it, it's a piece of cake. And like FB71 says...

Indeed. Of the 3 festivas I've had, not one had a tach. Use the ones on the sides of your head.
Any difference that makes no difference is no difference.

How true...I've taught a bunch of people to drive stick and it erks me to no end when they ask "at what speed do I shift"....ITS SOMETHING YOU FEEL...

I haven't always had a tach, but I have always driven this way. I learned back when I was 19, and the clutch was going on a company car I drove, the owner taught me. I still use a clutch when I am delivering, I am in too much of a hurry to play with it then. For normal driving though, I am clutch less except to start. Twice, I have had to drive with no clutch to start, come to a stoplight, turn off engine, put in 1st, turn ign switch, rabbit hop to get rolling, and away I go! If you are not on a steep hill, do it in 2nd, and you don't really hop at all in a festy!
