Ford Festiva, 121 Mazda, and Kia Pride I don't think it should be in list of worse cars... what about Yugo cars? they don't last long enough...

As far as the scary car list goes, driving the festy at 85, surrounded by tractor trailers, is what I call saving like a mutha on my gas mileage. I love it when I climb on a semi's bumper, and amother gets RIGHT on mine, trying to scare me. This is when my foot barely touches the pedal. Scares the beejesus out of my wife when I crack a beer while doing this

ive had experiences with several of the cars on the car talk worst list. what does that say about my life...lol

my aunt had a daulphine. i found it much like riding in a vw beetle. it had a cool thing, 2 horns, one was a polite chirp, the other a more agrressive big sounding horn. i thought it was a cool little econocar of that era.

when i was a cop, the pd drove aspens and volares, and yes they did really suck. they had v8's of course, but just very poorly built, and awful handling cars. scary as hell chasing someone in those things, believe me.

my former father in law owned a gremlin. it had a 6 cylinder in it, and i found it a chore to drive, gas mileage wasnt great either. he bought it new wo a radio...thing never did have a radio in it. it was some fun ride.

i had a couple friends with pintos, i didnt find it such a ghasly car except for the annoying habit of it exploding on rear impact. the wagons with just the small porthole windows were kinda cool. it drove much better than the vega.

my 1st mistake, exwife, (gremlin's daughter) had a 73 vega while in college. when we married lucky me, i got the vega as my usual daily driver. it was an awful car, slower than a turtle in heat. we didnt have any problems with it though, nothing fell off while driving, no mechanical troubles. not even really a rust bucket. it was just a drastically underpowered and poor handling car. it didnt die until 85, still i felt bad when it finally croaked.

We used to have a couple of Vegas. Very junky. I believe the Vega was one of GM's first attempts at an aluminum engine block. It wasn't a good attempt. Most of the engines only lasted about 30,000 miles, then they needed to be overhauled. They bored and resleeved the engine then they actually lasted a while. Their comment about the bodies being made out of compressed rust is no joke. However the bumpers always looked nice since they were aluminum.

Here are some good Yugo jokes.

One thing that has always bothered me is most list ragging cars never considers the price paid for the car...think about it....You get what you pay for.

That is why this site exist and does well...The festiva beat the odds....possibly the greatest value of car ever produced.

JGLUTZ hit it right on the head - The things the don't like about the Festiva - I LOVE - I love the simplicity! I Love the fact that almost all the maintenance can be done with simple tools! I love the fact that it gets great gas mileage and yet can easily keep up with Big Rigs on the New Jersey turnpike going 90 MPH. I like the fact that they last forever - Many have over 400K miles on original engines. Geez all that and they cost around $6K when they were new.
Another thing that has me puzzled is if they aren't all that great - How come they are produced as so many clones - Mazda 121 and KIA Prides which are extremely abundant in other countries.
My personal opinion is that these car people don't know much and go with what they think popular opinion is. - With gas prices getting higher and higher, popular opinion will most likely change. I love it when I'm getting gas and see the guy with the big SUV putting $80 in his tank! Some of that opinion may be "GAS MILEAGE ENVY" - LOL!
BTW, I had an 80 Monza - Not a bad car at all (But it did have an 'iron duke' engine instead of the Aluminum some had). Biggest problem was hitting my head on the roof rail getting in and out (just to small for my taste). A Toyota hit it on the passenger side - The car was a TANK. (of course, the Toyota was junk) - I drove away, the toyota didn't. Also, the best performing car at the Junkcar race in Birdsboro, PA in the small car class is ALWAYS the Chevettes - They just keep going and going (Another little tank from GM). So sometimes you have to wonder what they are basing their opinions on. The Monza and Chevettes were at least very safe cars.

It seems, in looking at the car talk list, that the bias is against smaller cars. So, I am assuming their issue is safety. Not sure tho. You also have to remember that today's average car buyer is looking to drop 30 grand+ for an all wheel drive, or 4 wheel drive, that will never leave the pavement, and sit in the garage when it snows.

Having owned a Festiva, and a Monza, and driven a Chevette, I would say that for their time, they were good cars. Amazing to this day how many 20+ year old cars on their list are still going, and how many of what I'm sure they would call "good cars" are sitting in junkyards or used car lots because nobody can afford them for long.

                  Okay, rant over.

I really thought the Merkur XR4Ti whould've been on the list, but after reading looking the list over...I still think it should be on there somewhere. If they cost the same as a Yugo or Chevette then I say they're better. But come on...for the sticker price of greater than $20,000 you got a nicely equipped car that out lasted a Yugo ONLY because you were still making payments and couldn't justify throwing it away.

I bet the guy that wrote that book drives an H2. Notice that I do not call it a Hummer. Those POS's shouldn't have even made production, but some loser engineer somewhere decided that there are plenty of suckers in the US that will buy it. I guess that the author didn't take into account that there are Festiva's that are still going with over 500K miles on them.
