My 20 year old Festiva hit 53MPG in its young days, while going cross-country with camping, camera & other gear. It seemed to taper off as the years went by. Have changed sparkplug wires twice which got Festiva back on its feet. Had my mechanic change the timing belt. Got 40 & 44MPG. Then over a 3 day period, 3 warmups & travel over 5500 Chinook Pass near Mt. Rainier, Festiva turned a stunning 51.8MPG! If I had continued driving, Festiva could have gone 500 miles on its tank. Never did Festiva or Plymouth Champ turn a 50MPG tank unless the road was flat AND continuous without any warmups! The timing belt has restored Festiva's youth & more. The belt whirs away giving a low sub-tone to Festiva's engine.

As mentioned other places, the timing belt(& sparkplug wires?) is responsible for the last 3 mountain travel tanks to be 50+ MPG! The Festiva's last mnt. trip had a gain & loss elevation total of 10,300 feet(possibly 11,000)!
