Sad to say that it varies.
OEM's seem to be 32mm, but after market vary from 28 to 32mm.
We had a thread on this not too long ago, I'll see if I can find it and post the link here.

Everyone, till I got the turquoise fester, was 32mm.
I bet I looked funny when I put the old impact wrench with the 32mm socket on it and it just spun!

I just went to the jy yesterday after reading this, intending to pull some aspire brake & suspension parts. For one thing, I couldnt find a 29mm nut for the life of me. For second, a 30mm nut worked on the aspire...I didnt mess with the festiva axle nut.

I've seen 3 different socket sizes required on the various Festiva's I've worked on.

Focustiva: Because I was told it was was impossible to fit a Focus bumper on a Festiva.

when i did this the first time, one side was 1 1/8" an the other side was 1 3/16"......

so that leads me to believe that the 3 sizes mentioned above is correct..

Sam is correct. I was there when the nuts were removed.
