  • The ticket I didn't get...

The threads on close encounters or near misses with the local constabulary reminded me of a ticket I didn't get.

One of my older boys and I were heading up to Lake Louise from Calgary for a day of skiing/snowboarding. I was Friday night and running a little late and we were nearing our desination at around 10pm running at about 120 km/h in a 90 zone. I saw the police car coming towards us and thought immediately ooops! I said to Jordan that I thought I was going to get pulled over and sure enough the police car turned around and caught up to us pretty quickly with lights flashing.

I pulled over right away... the officer came to the window and asked if I knew why I was being stopped and I said that I was going a little fast. He said that he had clocked us at 119km/hr and asked for all my papers. He came back to the car and said that I had "exceeded the speed limit by $138.00" (this was about 6 years ago, the fines have increased substantially since then) asked if I knew what the limit was. I said 90 and then he replied that I should keep a little closer to the limit, handed me back my papers with NO ticket.

The funny thing about the whole incedent is that we were trying to do the ski day on the cheap... we were driving a Festiva (my old white one), we were staying at the youth hostel and I had picked up our lift tickets on Airmiles! My wife would not have been very happy if I had come home with the ticket:grin:

Anyone else with a story to tell?

I have only got away with that once, 2 years ago, stopped while going through Clearwater at 2 am cruising over 100K in an 80K zone. The officer asked for my license and I told him it was in the back of the pickup with canopy loaded to the nuts with band gear. One of my band mates immediately said to the officer, your not going to make us unload this stuff are you? I asked the officer if it would help if I knew my DL number , and he said maybe. I gave him my number, he went back to his car , and came back after a few minutes and said I should slow it down and have a good night....
The funny thing is that when I unloaded the next day, I found my wallet up front in the seat scabbord of the seat cover. I wonder what the outcome would have been had I handed him my license?
Aspires and Sways all around, Miata B6 installed, KYB G2Rs just installed in front. Wish for coil overs someday.

knock on wood, but ive yet to get a ticket in the town i live in. lots of warnings. when other friends tell me about cops, they talk about how big of jerks my city's police are. i guess they are trying to get rid of riffraff, or actually appreciate taxpayers...lol i know if i did something totally blatant or unsafe ill be in for it, but its been minor things like cutting across parking lots to avoid congestion, being the first out of an intersection but still under the limit...pretty much what aspires and festivas are known for.

            1979 Mazda RX-7.

I thought I was the Drift King of Faulkner County. Had a green light to turn right and somehow my tail end got out from under me (it was the least powerful car I had driven up until that point so I KNOW it wasn't my throttle foot that did it ). A cop just happened to be sitting at a gas station down the road. He pulled me over and we talked about the car and the pocket bike i had crammed into the hatch area more than my stunt.

            1998 Frontier

It was night time and I was in the turning lane when as soon as I was turning a guy ran in front of me so I had to stop in between lanes. The oncoming car was a police crusier and after he switched lanes to avoid a wreck he turned into the parking lot with lights on so I knew it was for me. He got out of the car really fast and came over with his light in my face. He asked me if I wanted to cause a wreck and I said "I was avoiding one". He looked at me funny and I asked him if he seen the guy run across the street. Apperently he didn't so he asked for my and my girlfriends DL. We watched as he got in his car and asked his partner a question who nodded his head. He sat in his car for a minute like he was running my tags and got out and said we were free to go.

I have nothing against police, they're doing their jobs even after being disrespected and talked bad to everyday.

I was 16 my car was a restored 84 LTD Interceptor. The owner before me had returned its apearence to stock, rebadged, and reinstalled factory wheel covers. It was the ultimate sleeper. I was running 90 down a back road that was posted for 45 luckily the unmarked didnt catch me on radar but knew i was running too fast by the dirt I was kicking up. He then radioed an all car alert for my little brown "grandmas car" and began persuit. I lost him but when I hit main (goining the speed limit now) a black and white fliped and followed me, an a block later flipped on the overheads. I was stoped on one of the busiest intersections with a squad and an unmarked behind me and me with my hands on the trunk. after the search of the car the cop asked me why I was speeding and I told him that I was running late (which I was). he then gave me the choice of being a half hour later or going down town. Of course being the smart young man that I was . . . I took the half hour of lecturing and walked away with a written warning.

I was coming home at 2 am after falling asleep. I was in suburbia - 25 mph zone. I was driving my first festiva 89L 4 speed. I had just changed the plugs and wires and left one loose. I fixed it and since there was noone in sight I hammered down to test it out. DOwn a steep short hill, up a steep short hill, down a steep short hill, up a long moderate grade. I hit 75 mph and as I passed a side street I saw 2 cop cars parked beside each other talking. I was going 50 mph over, I was tripling the speed limit!!! I got to the bottom of the next hill and just stopped and waited. They showed up promptly. He was like "what are you doing?" I told him the truth. He took my license, ran my info, and came back saying. "You better not ever let me catch you doing that again, I will take you straight to jail!" Man I about peed my pants. Talk about dodging a bullet!

Was a lot of years back but I was heading into work on a saturday morning, about 5:30am. I was supposed to be there and on the road by 6am and I lived 45 minutes away. I was a garbage man. I had a 77 Toronado, man what a sweet ride. I hit the freeway on ramp and was at 90mph by the bottom of it. I was a few miles down the road when I passed a median cut through. I shot a look over and noticed headlights, I thought damn and took my foot off the gas knowing for sure I was done. I coasted to about 75 and I looked in the rearview and all I saw were the headlights of the couple cars I had just passed. Didn't think about it and just jumped back in it, right back up to 90. I kept looking in the rearview and all of a sudden a set of headlights came out from behind the cars and on went the red and blues.
I slowed for a second and a million things went through my head and I gyess it was the ticket I had gotten about a week before that made my foot bury to the floor. I had never had the car over 90 but man when I hit the gas the tranny kicked down and that thing took off...within seconds the needle was buried past 120 and I could feel the car still pulling. I looked in the rearview and watched the cops lights getting smaller and smaller.
I kept my foot to the floor and thought, man...he can't keep up...this is awesome. That car was flying and being a Toronado it was like floating on a cloud, it felt great.
I swear it was still gaining speed as I got to the next major on ramp, I needed the next exit after that and was making great time. As I approached the on ramp there was another cop sitting there with his lights on, waiting for me. I did not let off...I figured I had nothing to loose now. Just as I got to the ramp a Semi was coming down it to get on the freeway. The truck was right there as I passed the entrance...totally blocking the cop from getting on. As I passed I saw the cop start moving....but he never even got close to me....could not catch up. I had about 4 miles to go to get to the exit I needed. I got there quick...I could see the bottom of the exit and there were no cops in site. Then all of a sudden....the rearend came out from under me, like I was drifting. I thought I was dead...especially at that speed.
I let off the gas and was ready for the car to come around and the damn thing straightened out. I was off the gas and starting to pull over...knowing the cops would be on me soon. The car was still riding ok though...no sag or nothing in the rear end...and the noise it was making had stopped.
I thought screw it and gassed it again. Flew up the exit ramp at about 75. Got to the end and did a quick looksie...it was still dark and did not see any headlights so I never fully stopped. I just slammed the corner and punched it again.
I had about a mile to get to work...I flew in the drive and back to the pole barn where the trucks were kept. Pulled the car behind the barn and ran inside. Got the truck started and pulled out as quick as possible. Noticed it needed fuel so I headed to the station and started fueling up.
Man I was so hyped when I walked inside that the guy asked what was wrong with me. I knew him so I started telling him what had happened and he started flipping out. He turned up his scanner and all you could hear was the cops talking back and forth looking for ME! He said that he had been listening to them talk the whole time I was on the road and that if I had went one more exit they had the nail strips set up for me.
I got out of there and had to head back the way I came. As I drove down the road...the sreet was filled with State boys shining their lights down drives looking for my car. I worked that whole day wondering what would happen when I got back.
I pulled into the drive and back to the pole barn. Got the truck all stored up and went back to my car. I then saw that the rear passenger tire tread had separated from the tire, like a retread. It had beat the hell out of my quarter panel but the tire was still holding air, wires hanging out all over. Well I got the tire changed and headed home on the back roads. I took the back roads for months after that. I never did get caught, I do not know how they could not find my metallic orange Toronado with the white vinyl top. With the beat to crap rear quarter.
Man what an experience that was...man how stupid was that....I am lucky to be alive.
