  • New Festiva Owner

Just bought a 1990 Festiva, and love it. I have a couple of questions about the car...First, the fitting that goes around the stick shift is completly rotted which causes the stick to "fall". Is there a fitting that can be bought? Right now I have some things "rigged" up to keep it from falling onto the exhaust. Also, I'm beginning to notice that after long rides in the Festiva, when I get out and venture into my apartment...I kinda smell like the festiva, engine/gas. Is there any way to check somewhere, and find out why I smell like gas? Maybe the fumes from the Fuel Pump, I'm not too sure.
    Thank You in advance

Might check the gasket on top of the gas tank it might be leaking. You have to lift up or remove the rear seat, pull up the carpet. Then I think there is a cover. Remove it. If you smell alot of gas, then you have to remove 10 or 12 screws to pull the fuel pump out and replace the gasket, which I have no clue where to get the gasket. Somebody else may know.

Might be an exhaust leak from what you are saying.

May have a rust hole in the floorboard that is allowing fumes in.

Try to narrow down the location of the smell.

I'll let him be the judge of what he consider a "supermodel", provided after your potential visit, that he'll ever answer the door again and risk seeing you in nothing but a wet tied off t-shirt.:p

I agree with Levitan. If the odor is like raw gas, then it is probably leaking around the top panel of the fuel tank. If it is more like an exhaust odor, there is a hole somewhere. As for sealing the fuel tank, if you can't find a gasket, Permatex gasket sealer should work pretty well.

Welcome to the Madness that is Festiva! To follow up with Hawkdoc & Levitan's advice, I'd pull off the plastic fascia around the left side of the rear seat and check all the hoses going into the fuel tank from the filler neck. There's some vapor recovery stuff there as well, so give everything going into/out of the gas tank a good once-over!

Focustiva: Because I was told it was was impossible to fit a Focus bumper on a Festiva.
