  • just bought me a taurus

yep, $250 for a running, driving taurus lol... its a '95, 3.0 v6, runs great only 97k on the clock, but the transmission won't shift out of first gear when you drive it (reverse works too). Its only a couple miles away so I'll probably drive it home at 25MPH lol. Other than the trans its in good shape, white with dark blue interior. Pics will follow probably on thursday when I go pick it up but I'm excited to have a taurus again, just too bad its not a wagon lol
    No festiva for me ATM...

    Congrats on the new purchase!!

If no one from the future stops you from doing it, how bad of a decision can it really be?

ah, the 3.0L Vulcan... Indestructible!!! Too bad the trans is made of paper mache'. If you're going to rebuild the trans, get the TransGo valve body corrector kit. The primary weaknesses of the AXODE are the lack of full-time lube to the planetaries (only pressurized in 1st and 2nd, splash in 3rd and 4th), and the weak Forward and Direct clutch pistons. www.bulkpart.com usually has steel pistons to replace the factory aluminum ones. Also, the AXODE was updated to the AX4S in '95. Both versions suffer from "cross-engagement", basically they gradually release one gear while gradually engaging the next. This 'synchronous' (the S in AX4S) shift robs alot of power and creates TONS of heat, and significantly adds to wear. The later revised version is the AX4N, or 'non-synchronous' is a significant improvement, but is NOT interchangable, due to very different electronics.

ah, I know about the AXODEs lol, owned a few older tauruses before... been there, broke those So, I suppose mine probably has a this strange new beast called AX4S? I've only had first gen tauruses in the past so I don't really know much about the newer ones but the build date is 06/95 so I guess mine is a late late '95 model, because its definitely not the disturbing monstrosity from the '96 model year that had the same name as the real taurus lol

AXODE and AX4S are basically the same trans. Only a few smallish differences.

'86-'91 had AXOD, '92-early '95 had AXODE, mid '95-2001 had either AX4S or AX4N, depending on engine and assembly plant.

                Hey htchbck,
This is off topic, but how is your Daihatsu Charade? There is one in Austin,Tx for sale. He's asking $650 OBO, and says it's in great shape, and needs nothing (not sure if thats 100% true). I was going to buy it, but purchased this Festiva, because he E-mailed me back 2 hours before the Daihatsu owner.

The charade got hit by a postal truck one morning when I was headed to the bank. And apparently the state patrol officer told the towing company (who I called to tow my car) to put a hold on the car so now until the officer decides to call me back (been almost a month now and I've called the secretary and left a message just about every day) I can't even go look at the car, much less fully assess the damage, although I'm sure the thing is toast anyway, but I still need to get some stuff out of it and I really want to put the old wheels and tires back on and get those 16s with <2000 mile tires off it. but oh well :-(

yeah the one in my wagon was a pain, and I changed it while I already had the motor out doing a rebuild on it anyway lol... I'm crossing my fingers hoping it may be the shifter linkage I had one of my old tauruses do that to me where whenever I pulled into drive it was a little off and it pulled it all the way into L, and I know this shifter is a little off too, so maybe the trans won't need replacing... I hope lol, but I know it probably is the trans, thats definitely the weak link in these things' drivetrain (that and overheating lol)

only the 3.8L, and they overheat due to blown head gaskets.

hmmm... but both of mine that kept overheating said 3.0 lol... and usually the head gaskets blew after they overheated lol (actually only happened once, but the overheating was quite common for both mine)

really?? I've worked on literally thousands of Taurus' (Tauri?), and I've only ever seen 3 or 4 of the 1st gen Vulcan 3.0L overheat...

now the jellybean (96-99) cars, that's a different story...
