i'm not sure why but my 89 festiva lx kinda chugs at low speeds, or any speed that isn't accelerating. if you are speeding up its smooth, but just "cruising" at 45 mph its jerky. i do have a "service engine" light lit up on the dash. any thoughts?

may be time for a minor tune up. when did you do plugs, air filter, etc...? also, run a bit of seafoam through the engine to clean things up... just some thoughts..

Check timing. Make sure you disconnect and plug the vacuum lines to the distributor or you will be 13+ degrees off. I bought a festiva from a guy who timed it wrong and it was giving me the same issue. Fixed the timing and she has tons more power.

Another possibility is the fuel filter. However, I am not sure if it would be smooth acceleration if it were.
