I've always done this but never knew why. Why do you need to remove the spark plugs when manually turning the engine?

I don't usually remove them... it doesn't make it that much harder to turn.
One time I was turning my B6 over by hand, and was wondering why it was going so hard b/c I had never had a problem with leaving the plugs in before... then I realized i left it in gear. That makes it a little harder to turn, but leaving the plugs in doesn't do much!~Nate
