  • Noobish Question

I've always done this but never knew why. Why do you need to remove the spark plugs when manually turning the engine?

because without them there is no compression in the cylinders thus making it easier to turn

I don't usually remove them... it doesn't make it that much harder to turn.

One time I was turning my B6 over by hand, and was wondering why it was going so hard b/c I had never had a problem with leaving the plugs in before... then I realized i left it in gear. That makes it a little harder to turn, but leaving the plugs in doesn't do much!

Easier to turn and the crank tends to stay in place after you turn it thou sometines the valvle springs will tend to kick the crank fore or aft a few degrees.

It is a good habit, and causes less cursing and groaning.
