  • Need Help Making Car Decision

I am pretty sure what the answer is going to be but here goes...

I've taken a buy-out package and we're moving but my wife says "Buster" (1990 Festiva Plus w/168k) can't Go but I'm struggling with what to do. We've always owned VW Tdi's and have two currently. One is on the block with "Buster", it's a 1998 Beetle Tdi, 5-sp, w/126k on the clock. I've gone back and forth three times now and I'm back to saying "Buster" is going to the new house (and the 1998 Beetle goes to a new home). I love the Festiva, 5 speed, air that works and 40+ miles to the gallon. If I keep Buster I've found a engine with 38k for $350.00 and I'm sure I have enough paint to repaint him white (the original color) and he's good to go and will kill the Beetle as for as operational costs (insurance/taxes/fuel). He'll actually be a a third car back-up and I can bank the money from the Beetle. I'm sure your vote is going to be the same as mine so le'me here your opinion. (Don't worry, I have the last word. If I say Buster goes to the Country Club, he's going. Screw the neighbors. He's a Champ!)

I currently pay for a storage garage to keep mine in because i dont have a place for it at home . . . so my answer is to keep it and say farewell to the Beetle

Yes, you know what we are going to say. As you stated, the festiva will save you much $$$ in the long run..
Also, if you were to sell either of them, what could you get out of each? Thats something to consider with your wife as well. Anything wrong with buster? 168K miles should go to 200+ miles, so that engine swap sounds optional. Good luck with your decision, i hope Buster stays!

You know VW TDIs. They have their quirks and problems that need maintenance. Festivas don't need anywhere the maintenance of a newer VW TDI and do not break as often, plus fuel is cheaper for the festiva.

Engine wise, he still runs good to have 168k but it does go though about a quart in 2,000 miles. Not so bad but the low mileage Aspire engine is Cheap (I might be able to get it for $300). The Tdi's have saved me thousands over the years but yes they are more quirky and cost more to repair. The Beetle should bring $5000.00 and Buster will bring $1200.00. (I had the Beetle sold for $4850.00 and backed out on the guy.)

Bad news, I've decide to sell them both. Here's Busters funeral notice (for sale here).
