Last time this got brought up, I think I remember Simon mentioning security issues with the forum and the chat plug ins that were available.

Chat is good, but there's no record of what happened or what was said. For newbees, like me, reading the FORUM provides knowledge. There's just so much I don't know about the Festiva. I think it'll end up with people with the most information talking among themselves. "Preaching to the choir" so to speak. My feelings are mixed. Think newbees COULD be shut out. Just a thought.

i was thinking today and i used the search feature before creating a new post.. lol

this is still possible, without having to worry about security, mods, or chat plugins, but that still would leave no records available, but would still be useful.

i will only provide the link, to a free web chat service, if authorized to do so. doesnt require flash or java, only javascript. no ads, no signing up (though you can to preserve your nickname) and nothing to pay for. this doesnt have to be a set in stone decision, it could be tried out and if it doesnt go over well, nothing will be lost

also has a feature to do a private chat "query" and a list of all memebers in the chat room, and for those that use IRC chat programs you can connect via that as well.

^^ I used to use mIRC all the time. Works very well and is pretty simple and user friendly

If they can't get chat to work on here, maybe a member can create an IRC chat or MTec007's program and the info can be stickied on how to use and join.

                    Just a thought.

mIRC yes, but also xchat, for the cheap skates. but i like mIRC so i finally registered my copy. Either way, web chat will be the most user friendly way to go though, IMO. I actually have something set up and running, just awaiting permission, i dont want to step on any ones toes by posting it if there were to be any issues

okay i guess lets give it a go. ok for starters go to this website:
                          http://webchat.freenode.net

fill out the form with your prefered nickname, assuming its not already taken.
                          channel is #fordfestiva.com

once you connect type this to register your nickname:
                          /msg nickserv register password emailaddress

                          dont forget the slash!

next time you connect when you fill out the channel and your nickname now check auth to services, fill out your username again and your password and connect

thats it. i can change some of the stuff like the welcome message and topic to taste.. it was just a quick filler

now for those that want to use their chat programs, thats:
                          server irc.freenode.net
                          port 6667
                          channel #fordfestiva.com

registration is same, to log in (identify) type:
                          /msg nickserv identify password

                          dont forget the slash

well going this way requires no work, debugging upkeep or money. thats why i vowed for this solution. unless you want to create an irc client (assuming the server will allow for that, my personal website bans any type of irc connections, client or server )

IRC allows webchats and most servers will help you set one up for free, so you just need to host the shell page and the IRC server still takes all the load. Just a thought.
