  • Looking for Information/Advice : About to purchase one Ford Festiva

Long story short, I'm thinking about buying this car and want your help, advice, and to pick your brains:

    The good:
    - 88 (carbed, duh)
    - 5 Speed
    - The tan interior seems to be in decent shape, with the exception of the driver's seat
    - NO RUST!
    - Factory air (condition unknown)
    - only piece missing is the factory radio
    - it's a light blue i've never seen before

    The bad:
    - Dent in rear quarter panel
    - needs a windshield as it's cracked
    - hasn't run in two years
    - needs "transmission work" (the car goes into every gear, which leads me to believe it's either the master cylinder or clutch)
    - it's gonna need rubber. (tires, coolant hoses)
    - needs a battery, which i happen to already have
    - the key is broke off in the ignition, but has extra with key
    - needs a power cable for the battery
    - needs a really good bath.. everywhere

The things that might work, but I'd want to replace anyway:
    - distributor
    - alternator
    - water pump
    - timing belt!
    - oil
    - all filters, spark plugs, wires etc

So the rundown is, if he can get it running again (he said it ran great when it did), i've worked out a deal with him.

What are ya'll experiences with prices on these pieces? What would you pay for it? Is it worth it?

Bottom line, I'm looking to save a Festiva and have it reliably back on the road for around $5-600 including cost of the car. That leaves me $2-300 to play with initially. Other stuff (such as mods) can come later. I will have 2 and a half weeks to get this car into shape for me to drive 45 minutes to and from work 5 days a week and around town on the weekends. I don't mind putting in the time or effort or reasonable amounts of money. What are your views??

I'm sure I left something out, so if you have any questions, ask away.

with truly no rust, it is hard to say. I have found 2 which I was told had "no rust" but did. I would say rust free, running or not, you can't really go wrong for $500. Is it L, LX...etc? Good find... I hope you get it up and going. One more on the road is always a good thing!

BTW, I have 2 factory radios. I don't know if they work or not, but you are welcome to them. I will just toss them if noone wants them.

I was too busy crawling on the ground in my office clothes (had just got off work) looking for rust everywhere to remember to see what trim level it was. The deal is for $300, but I'm hoping $200 on top will get me going really well again.

I probably would since I'd be tight for a week or so after getting this back on the road with insurance and paying over $600 to get my license back.

Already tried the $200 gag. He said for that he'd keep it himself for a project, but if he's going to do the nasty work and pull it out of the weeds and stuff, I'll throw him an extra $100 just to snap it up.

NOTE TO ALL: It's going to depend on how it runs ultimately. I'm not quite financially prepared to do an immediate swap on this car, although I could probably pull it off if necessary, but I would have to renegotiate.

Agreed. But hopefully this guy is not a mechanic and you can fix it easily if he can't. My 3rd one I got from an idiot that couldn't figure out that the alt. belt was loose, so the battery wouldn't charge. I got it tightened up in 5 minutes, and it charges the battery just fine. I still think it is worth $500 with no rust, especially if it still runs as good as he says it did. With what you said you are going to do to it right away, I think that should take care of a lot of problems, and make it dependable for you. BTW, don't forget to CHECK THE BRAKE LINES! If it has been sitting for any time at all, most of those will be rusted to hell, and should not be trusted.

Good point. Thanks for that. Maybe I'll splurge on one thing lol... doubt it, probably use factory parts.

Edit: I forgot to mention that it has the factory rear defrost option.

I'd say it's worth the $300 but no more, since it's not currently running and needs other stuff. That dent you can maybe pop out by removing the inner plastic to get at it.

Mine was in similar condition and I turned it into what it is today. If it were me I'd look for a Fuel Injected model though....just for ease of swapping later. Oh yeah, all the little parts you have to fix will add up quick too!

i gave 200 for this one but spent another 100 on fuel to get it.

i got it running and was sitting with all of the others that TONYCASH has what a pain to get it out of the spot it was sitting. jsut cleaned the sending unit and bam it runs well i have to rebuild the carb now and i did an aspire swap on it and need tires now aspire ones are badly bald.
