When I taught driver's ed, one of my students told about a teen he knew whose parents bought him a Mustang GT. He wrecked it. They bought him another brand new Mustang. He wrecked that one. At the time of this story, the parents were considering buying him another car.

In general, folks who have things handed to them won't be as careful or appreciative as those who have to work their butts off to get something similar.

As for BMWs, I've driven one. It was around 1984 and I test drove a 1975 2002. I loved it. The Blue Book said I could afford it.

I couldn't. It was over $1000 more than my limit. My explanation was the yuppies were driving the price up on all BMWs and they didn't know the difference between a 2002 and one of the upscale luxury models that I hated.

i know how that private school poor kid minority thing goes... i went to a catholic high school and there were like 5 of us who always had crappy cars that sadly were usually faster and ran better/longer than any of our classmates' new mustang/audi/bmw

im at car #21 since i was 15 (im 19 now lol) and until i had enough money saved from buying 500$ cars thats what i drove (now ive got a pretty nice 3000GT VR4, but i daily drive my might be faster festiva lol)

i always hated it when one of the rich kids would mess his car up royally, laugh and say its ok my parents are getting it fixed, and while it would be getting fixed tehy would laugh at my still running car while they were driving their dads escalade/tahoe or even once a corvette...

I went to a private high school
Now we now why you learned latin. I went to public school (and believe in the system), so I worked nights, weekends, summers for my "shitvette" Though I never learned to fix my own car, driver's ed did show basics on what to look out for and although my parents never helped me with car finances, they did teach me to be a safe responsible driver and that driving a car costs money in maintenance, repairs and emergencies, not just sticker price and gas. People who can't afford a towing or winter tires shoudn't be allowed to own cars.

What does this have to do with the original thread? I have no idea!
I was referring to Roland and Chris Rummel's comments.

ah, yes. Private school. Jesuit run. Loyola Blakefield in Towson for you locals. 8 years of Catholic elemtary school, 4 years of Jesuit high school, and a lifetime of therapy!

and at the time (1985-1989), HappyMom, the local public schools were below average. I'm actually glad I went to a private school, knowing how some of my friends and neighbors turned out attending the local publics.

The current state of Maryland public schools, outside of Baltimore city, is significantly better than when I attended school. My two boys attend public school, and I keep a watchful eye on what is taught and how its taught, and so far, I'm very pleased.

and as far as the 'what does this have to do' comment, I was refering to my little rant.

            WTF

WTF, the comments I made about this guy being a moron, had to do with him using a sock to plug his oil fill hole, instead of searching under the car to find the oil cap, like most non morons would do. it has nothing to do with wither or not the guy can work on his own car. I also find he is an even bigger moron for going online to a forum of like morons to suggest some rube goldberg solution to his conundrum. I never went to private school, in fact everything I know about cars i learned on my own with the tutoring of a friendly mechanic and his family when i was in the army. I got my learning experiences from breaking down on the road in a 72 TR6 In the middle of nowhere south Carolina on a Sunday night on my way back from leave when I was pressed to get back before I was AWOL. paying a mechanic "all the money in my wallet to put a Chevy wheel bearing in just to get back" motivated me to GET knowledge, but even when I knew nothing about cars I never did anything as stupid as this moron who very obviously got this car handed to him, probably for something like not getting all D's on his report card.

So frankly Mommy, I'm pretty offended by your comment.

Jim, when you move to Balt co. you may want to reconsider public school, I intend to move out to Carroll co when my kids are school age.

my kids live in Harford Co, Forest Hill area. My ex-mother-in-law works at their school, and I've personally talked with all their teachers. Those schools are ok by me.

And I hear things about Carrol Co.....

                    Very true.

My parents could easily afford buying me a brand new car, but they refused (despite my loud protests) to do so.

Thats how I ended up with the Festiva. I bought it for $200 and have paid for everything except gas to this day. And I appreciate my little beater far more than those driving their automatic '06 Mustangs.

First: Chris and I mis-understood what we were each trying to say. I read things between the lines that weren't there.

Original post in this thread: The first thing that classifies the guy as a moron is waiting for the oil pressure light to go on before checking the oil (cars who consume more than a quart per gas fill-up are excluded from this rule  ) It all goes downwards from there.

Spoiled brats with new cars from daddy: I've never really seen this around here, maybe it's a cultural thing. Kids who were fortunate to have cars given to them by their parents got non-performance beaters. I only know of one girl who got a new car from Daddy: Company president's daughter got a Golf as a gift for beign accepted in med school, so even that kinda makes it earned.

                      #21:??? I'm only on #4 (Festy) and #5 (Corolla) and I'm 37

It's a regional thing. In the great state of Iowa, few kids get brand new cars, if anything at all.

Down here in the large state of Texas, it's not uncommon for half the population to buy their kids the latest and greatest.
