121 #2: This time a Fun-Top

Hi all,

I just bought a Fun-Top on ebay:

Not yet sure whether it will be for spares or rebuild, but either way it'll be used for trial fitment of a low mileage B6-ME I picked up a while back.

I'm thinking a lowered debadged (no quirky 80's decals) Fun-Top, with Grey 121 Shades interior and B6/BP may be a good project..

Will share pics in a few days once I've picked it up.

I am sure the fun top is coming ocean freight. Just ask if you could ship the interior on the same skid and help with the shipping charges. It will take three months to arrive, so don't hold your breath. Excellent way to build patience.

he is in Australia where the car was being sold .....does not have to wait for it. He bought it to drive.

OK, have now had the Fun-Top delivered and starting to evaluate the car. See pics. I like the Spoiler!

This is what I got for $160:
Rust Free 1989 Mazda 121 Fun-Top with 225k Km's
Original Warranty Booklet & many of the Servicing receipts

Body:
A few dents that should pop out.
Will need replacement RH Door & Front Quarter Panel due damage
A Pillar structure looks fine.
Factory Mazda Headlight Protectors

Interior:
Rear Seats & Panel Trim is Mint
Front Seats dirty but should clean up OK
Carpet is fine
No A/C
Adjustable height Steering Wheel
Factory Radio Cassette Deck

Mechanical:
Timing Belt broke at 225k's, not run since.
Brakes work

A major service had been completed at 207k Km:
New Clutch & New Starter Motor fitted
Gearbox Main & Drive Seals replaced
New Ignition Module & Coil fitted
Carby Overhauled
This Service cost $ 2,100.00 :roll:
They should've changed the Timing Belt as well just to be sure..

Once I get a chance to wash off the baked-on dust & grime, clean the interior I'll connect up a battery & see if it all works. I'm tempted to buy a Timing Belt & Seals set and take it for a run..

btw. clean the canvas top thoroughly and give it a cure of armor-all plastics conditioner or a similar lifetime extending product for the vinyl skin.
UV rays, dirt and "dryness" are the arch-enemy for these roofs.

Looking at your pictures - do your corner markers have the signal bumps? it appears they do so do your protectors have the provision for the bump as well?

Chris - Thanks for your coments. The Canvas top has shrunk in the sun across the centre width & come off the frame sides, so I'll try some armourall to soften & stretch back on the frame.

Festiva tunner - The Mazda Covers have a cutout for the turn signal bump. See pic as fitted to my funtop:

I'd do the timing belt and drive it "original" for awhile. That'll help you work some of the bugs out anyway, while waiting for better parts to come along.

Yeah, I've already put on a new timing belt kit & water pump. With some engine start fluid help it started up easy & runs very smooth and cool.

It'll be a while before I fit a replacement drivers door & fender to fix the worst panel damage, tune it properly & bleed the brakes etc for Roadworthy Inspection but at least I can now move it around. There's a little Blue smoke when revving after extended idling so it may also need Valve Seals changed but I'll let the inspector tell me if that's required..
