I'm basically a noob to all car stuff but lets say you were going 45 and down shifted to first for a stop light wouldn't the rpm's be ridiculously high? So wouldn't that be bad for the trans?
I assume people wouldn't just pop the clutch in first going 45 but wouldn't it just be easier to put it in neutral and coast.

Correct, if you shifted in to first going 45 that would not be good. But generally when most people down shift they go 4,3,2,1.

As A truck semi driver I know federal laws stipulate that you cant move the truck in neutral for more than 1 truck length.(COASTING) So I drive everything that way. Ie Manual trannies.

I usually hold the clutch then shift to first (while still holding the clutch) after I stop. It's difficult to go into first while still rolling.
Sometimes I leave it in gear and hit the brakes, or downshift. My brakes are horrible right now. You can push the pedal all the way to the floor and you still just slow down. New rotors and pads are on the way, though.

Holding the clutch in and coasting will cause excessive wear on the throw out bearing. In many states it is illegal to coast. But I coast to stops too... tranny in neutral clutch out.

You can coast much further in neutral and it is better for gas even idling but only if you maximize the coast. Takes a lot of patience to coast from 55 to 0 minimizing brake usage and you have to deal with people behind you.

On the other hand, most EFI systems have a fuel cut on development over a certain rpm. On my tbird its 2000 rpm. I usually engine brake.

I just toss it into 2nd to help slow down before corners or stopping, I hardly ever just coast.
