Here's what you do - get the car running perfect and take it to him stating there's a problem in third gear. Don't descibe it just insist he ride in it so you can show him. Then take him for the ride of his life (remember third has a large power ban) then when you stop open the Hood and tell him you think the problem is the festiva transmission - that it just bolted right up without any issues and now the car is just too fast in third.

Yeah... gotta swap the exhaust though. I bought her from the original owner, who said that he's gone through 5-6 mufflers already. My whole cat-back is starting to go, but other than that, runs completely fine.

Anyone who TRULY knows something about cars, and has worked on them as much as this guy claims, would NEVER have made the statement he did. I have driven hybrid motor swaps my whole life. Everything ranging from a Mercedes 2.2L in a '69 Ranchero (my first school car when I was 14) to the Mercedes OM352 truck diesel in my '79 Ford F250 4X4. My father designed and built from scratch one of the first 4WD, "articulated steering" tractors back in the late '50s. One thing I have learned is that ANYTHING is possible with imagination, persistence, patience and a good set of tools!

This guy's attitude is proof that he's fake.

Get your swap done and take him for a good ride. Then tell him none of the flywheel bolts would line up exactly on the crankshaft so you used JB Weld to hold them in. He won't know whether to believe you or not.

                        Here's what I'd do..

Do the swap, then drive over to his place and burn off an old set of tires. Then tell him, "stock tranny" and drive off. Just those two words, stock tranny.

That'll get across the point really really well.

Also, I look at things like this.. five years from now, who's going to remember, fifty years from now, who's going to care.

Love the car, enjoy the car, relish the car, and prove him wrong and know that each day you drive the car afterwards is yet another day you proved him wrong. But ultimately, his opinion shouldn't matter if he's been proved wrong by others here. If it does matter so much, why does it matter so much? If he's basing his opinion on his experience, you need to show him something outside of his experience to correct a wrong assumption on his part. That's what I'd advise... /soapbox

so is anyone going to perk up and say the stock tranny will not hold up under the BP's horsepower and torque?

                              Two things:

                              1. If you own and drive and love Festivas, or any old cheap little cars, you need to develop a nice, thick skin.

                              2. I'm not a bettin' man, but this fool would tempt me to put down a $100 bill and challenge him to do the same.

That way you'd make some EASY gas money.

Casper ran fine w/the stock tranny, even after being launched multiple times at the dragstrip. As long as there's no wheel hop on launch, no worries. And once you're moving, again no worries.
