      Hi and welcome.
My '92 was originally a 5-speed, but somewhere along the line, there must have been a problem and it was replaced with a 4-speed, probably because that was what was available in the junkyard!

Another festiva back on the road ! What I found was the clutch disc was down to metal but still had enough left on the flywheel side to keep from scarring it . Much thanks to nonamekid for the great do it yourself write up on transmission change .Was much clearer than my Haynes . Mine to was changed out to a 4 speed at some time , the bad news is - there is no 4th gear . It goes into the position for fourth but doesnt grab - no noise -nothing . So until I locate a replacement , its in town only . Now I can concentrate on a few small things , exhaust and finding both corner marker lights .

Sorry to hear about the transaxle situation. Just something to take a look at.... look on the front side of thr transaxle and see if there are one or two sensors located there. These will have green wires connected to it/them. If there is one sensor, it was originally a five speed, two means it is a four speed. Check the shifting arm for bad bushings, or the shifter itself to make sure it is in the socket. Lots of slop may mean you need to grab the shifter and pop it back up into the socket.
Good news is that the Festiva is geared as a three speed with one or two overdrives depending if it is a four or five speed. NO KIDDING! You can safely do 55 MPH in third gear all day, but the overdrives improve gas mileage of course. At 55 MPH, you will be turning 4,000 RPM.
Let us know if you need anything. I am sure we can help.

Thanks for the additional info , there is just one sensor in the front of the transaxle and no slop in the shifter . Everything feels nice while shifting . . . so , im still a bit confused - is this a 5 speed then ? Maybe Im missin more marbles than I thought -

Ha ! Guess I will take your advise and check those bushing and check posts concerning this - caus it goes in the shift from fourth up and over to reverse . My shifter doesnt have the emblem showing the shift pattern and I didnt have a clue , its been many years since I owned a manual .

The four speed also had fifth gear's slot blocked off above reverse, so if it will go into that position, this may also be a clue as to the condition of the transaxle, and what it is/was. There may be an internal shift arm problem. Hard to tell with no history.
                  Good luck

I can see that it appears that I havent a clue ! Just went for another drive and still nothing in fourth - then went up and to the right , went into fifth and pulled for a bit then jumped into neutral . If I held up on the shifter it would stay in gear but make some grinding noise . So , thats all I know ... am reading past posts about these issues . Thanks for the info .

input shaft bearing? i beleive thats what went out in my 4 speed, and it did the same thing in 4th as you describe your is doing in 5th. any way whatever bearing it was that went out, it was on the very top of one of the shafts with gears on it, inside the tranny.. i just got another tranny because i couldnt rebuild one, without proper tools. the bearing had horrible up and down play, which its not supposed to have

i know how you feel. in january i pulled my original tranny due to the bearing, then had to pull that new one to replace the output shaft seals in the second tranny, and busted it up in the process. had to go get another at pullapart. so i've pulled 3 trannys in january..with a couple weeks if i remember correctly. granted one of the trannies i pulled was in a JY car.. dont know if that counts, but i did have to pull it myself..
