  • Downgrade?

    an introduction...

After a good couple months of research, looking at 4 or 5 Festivas online and test driving 2 others, I finally found mine. Even with all the research I still wasn't sure if I wasn't downgrading (hence the title), but I liked the looks and the community seemed better than what I was currently driving, a 4 cylinder automatic Geo Metro.

I drove over and test drove the car. The guy wanted $600 for it as he had purchased it in Michigan and drove it into Wisconsin, but wanted something bigger for work.

The Festiva is an red '89 L with just shy of 145000. The car was dirty and dented but it's 21 years old. The worst parts were that the windshield was cracked bad in 3 places and it has the rear wheel area rust. Other than that the car is in great shape, engine seemed mechanically in great shape and transmission was nice and tight. I offered the guy $400 for it and without too much thought, the car was mine, well sort of.

It took another month before I got the title (he had to get the title from MI and then it got lost in the mail). I finally titled the car and have been driving her since the beginning of May. I have to say this car is an incredible upgrade. For only 58 HP it is an amazing little 'race car.'

I have had a few issues in that time (gas tank seam leak, dieseling and burning oil on start-up) but overall these cars are awesome.

Pics to follow (when I figure it out)

    Welcome!

Sounds like you are doing well. For pics, you'll have to have a hosting site to put them before you post them here. I use Photobucket, and when I post pics, I just "copy" the bottom line on the photo dropdown and "paste" them on the page.

Welcome, it's a good looking L. A bit of TLC and you'll have it right in no time. I had the matching set of tail lights in my 89. I had a smoothie on the left and a ribbed one on the right. Looks like it still has the stock 4-speed and I assume it's a carby car. Congrats on the purchase and again welcome aboard.

After dealing with a ton of break issues on mine, i can say i'm thoroughly happy with it. It's actually entertaining to drive for being so low on power. It's my DD and replaced a warmed over '88 Merkur XR4Ti...which was obviously much faster but also much more finicky and got 10mpg less.

By the way, ^^^ That's 99.9% city driving

Welcome! My '89 LX had a broken driver side tailight and I replaced it with a ribbed one, so I had a smooth and a ribbed one just like you do.

I had a Metro and a Festy at the same time about 20 years ago. The Festiva seemed like the higher quality car overall.

Speaking of dialects, here is what you wrote, translated to Fuddese:
