Lurker turned newbie--I joined this site a couple of years ago, made a donation so's I'd feel better about about mining your brains for information.
I've been in the process of transplanting an '88 carbed 4 spd. manual into a slightly wrecked '93 injected auto that I want to use as a DD/Shop car. I'm ready to go--car is cleaned-up, painted, registered and not running very well.
The engine starts instantly, idles perfectly but has a "dead spot" that requires pumping the gas to run up the RPMs. I can slip the clutch, pump gas, and get moving-then by staying on the gas and up-shifting quickly, it runs fine, pulls strong in every gear but will not "cruise". As soon as I back off the gas, it starts to stall-out. Carb has been cleaned and gaskets and needle valve replaced, also new manifold gasket--holds 22 lbs of vacuum at idle, and has good fuel pressure.
I need help, or a new carb if someone has one for sale
    Thank you

    I'm guessing accelerator pump.
I don't have a carbie, but had a 1st gen civic that had the same problem.
replace the diaphragm with the push/pull rod on it and she ran fine.
There are plenty of people here who know way more than I do about the festiva carbies.

Just a question, why did you decide to swap the carbie into FI?
I would have thought swapping the short block into the FI unit and add the intake and exhaust might have been easier.:dontknow:

    Almost forgot!

    Welcome aboard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the quick reply. The acc. pump works OK. Reason for swap is that the '93 was wrecked on rt. front corner--tore up the trans. Had been racing the '88 and it runs beautifully. Also I knew nothing about festys and all the swaps available 'till found this site, if I had, I probably would have tried a swap. 58 hp isn't real competitive on a paved half mile. Also, and most important the car was a freebie form the local ford dealer.

Ned are you using the mechanical pump on the engine or the electric pump in the tank? It would be the first question I have. I run an 88L carby which still uses the mechanical fuel pump mounted on the engine. The carby's run at 2 to 5 psi, and the fuel injected cars run at 30 to 38 psi. I am affraid if you are using the electric fuel pump you may be sending the fuel at a high pressure to the carb. Just a thought, you may only need a fuel pressure regulator to crank down the pressure.

What did you do with the pump in the tank?

Removed it and replaced with tube/"sock" combo that fit in the mounting bracket, disconnected the pump wires, re-connected the sending unit wires.

Ok, that rules that out. did you just clean the carb? Or was it a complete rebuild? It sounds like maybe something just isn't seated or adjusted just quite right.

My mechanic buddy who did one of the cleanings thinks like kartracer. He of the opinion that there's an "intermediate circuit" that's not functioning right. Looks like another teardown.
I cleaned out the old gas and wiped out the tank when I was doing pump work. Also installed two in-line filters, the one closest to the carb is clear and no dirt can be seen in it.

Well if he does tear it down again, just tell him to pay close attention to the seats for the feedback portion of the carb. They aren't real difficult carbs to work on but they require a little finess when putting them back together. As an added note with the ethanol in the gas they seem to varish a bit easier than they used to as well. Daily drivers it's not a real big concern, but I think he will get it right for you this time out.
