The Mazda 2 is slated for release this week in Canada and later in the summer in the States. When I read over the specs, almost everything is standard. I have to ask myself was it really worth all the trouble installing similar options into my Festiva?

    power windows & door locks
    tilt steering
    remote keyless entry
    leather wrapped steering
    6 speaker audio w/mp3 interface
    cruise control
    digital clock
    air conditioning
    15" alloy wheels
1.5L DOHC engine with variable valve timing
rack and pinion with electric power assist steering
    etc.

    Low price too!

Yellow is not an available colour.

Interesting testing by Fifth Gear there. <BillNye>Inertia is a property of matter.</BillNye>

Looks like a great little car. Hopefully I wasn't the only one cringing at the body roll... I quite like it though... much better looking than the Fiesta IMHO.

I should also add that I highly anticipate the Mazdaspeed 2 / 2 MPS. Looks like they'll be dropping, chroming, and turbocharging the 2! http://www.caradvice.com.au/3702/mazda2-mps/

I've been eyeing the 2 since I got my girlfriend her '90 323 and looked at a new Fiesta.

Love every point you've made. For the same price, you get everything standard compared to a bare bones Fiesta. I think it will be my next car, honestly.

        same platform

Both the Mazda 2 and Ford Fiesta are built on the same platform.

          checked one out

          I checked out a Mazda 2 today.
          Black, fully loaded.

          Seats aren't super comfortable.
Visor mirrors are too small, no vanity lights.
Too low to the ground for me.

I like the outer electric button for opening the rear hatch.
I can imagine trying to get at the booster cables through the back seat in the trunk in the winter at -20.

It had a traction control button.
          Air
          cruise
          power steering

          It was an automatic.
It was over $20000 CAD with taxes, prep and delivery.

I think I have about $2000 invested in my Festiva.
          I like my Festiva better.

Lucky you got to see one. I don't know when they're coming to the states, but I've seen a lot of new fiestas toting around lately.

I was all excited about the new Fiesta. I went and looked at it. It is a nice enough car, but I remember when the Festiva came out in 1987 and I fell for it right away. Not so with the Fiesta. Maybe the Mazda2 will do it for me. I guess the Festiva seemed simple and humble. It was roomy and small. The new cars are not as small and not as simple. They are simply smaller versions of bigger small cars. The gas mileage is not even so great. They should be able to get 40 city and 50 highway with today's technology...without being hybrids. Seems 30 to 35 is all they can deliver. I guess the extra 500 plus pounds takes that away. Still, Corolla and Civic do as well as the mini cars.

                same platform

The Mazda2 and Ford Fiesta are built on the same platform. They are sisters.

I mistyped..meant Festiva seemed simple. The Mazda and Fiesta differ in many ways...Fiesta supposedly has MORE horsepower, weighs 200 pounds MORE and has a dual clutch six speed automatic..whatever THAT contraption is! That contraption gets it up to 40 highway mpg. The Mazda2 auto gets 6 less I heard.

I think they're would be some great compatibility between the two then, just like the festiva and BF 323's, so i could see some future engine swaps with those cars

                    1988 323 Station Wagon - KLG4 swapped
                    1988 323 GT - B6T Powered

1990 Festiva - First Ever Completed KLZE swap (SOLD)

If no one from the future stops you from doing it, how bad of a decision can it really be?

Based on the same platform. The term is used very loosely these days.

                        Mazda 2 and Fiesta

Yeah, mazda decided to spend the time to drop about 200lbs, but opted out of the 6spd trans? I would go for the mazda 2 still I think, but I have had my eye on the 2010 Mazda 3 for some time, so I am a bit biased........

Neither of them will compare with my Festiva though! Mostly for fuel econ!

If the new V6 mustang has 300 horsepower yet can deliver 30 mpg highway you would think they could throw 175 horsepower at the lightest thing that would meet current safety standards and get 50 mpg.

I totally agree Paul but I guess that would make too much sense

It probably could get 50 mpg in the right hands. At a steady 55 mph Im sure something north of 45 mpg is possible.

People seem to think that since the EPA rates a car at 40 mpg hwy they can do 80+mph down the interstate and get 40 mpg. Thats not how it works.
