    I make this trip often for work and the odos in the cars I use usually agree with the GPS

    It gets worse with distance

    West Bridgewater to Philly (19153)

    Google: 317 miles
    The GPS: 284

    I've done this trip a few times. The GPS is under by around 5 miles. That's compared to a car, so it probably isn't exact.

      Yes, the most accurate way would be the GPS.....BUT, if you dont have access to one, you may use the mile markers on the hwy. Those are VERY accurate!

        Like what are we to use for ODO readings?
        Example: my instruments cluster ODO reads approx 2.5 miles more per 100 miles driven than my GPS unit

        GPS = 400 miles
        ODO = 410 miles

        This does have a major effect on the MPG calculation.

        Another reason why I've never joined Fuelly, because of this difference and how to integrate this into the log.

        GPS readings are not pinpoint accurate. 1st Generations were accurate to within 100 miles! Miltary gets the newest and most accurate GPS. I believe they are close to 4 meters. I do not know how accurate todays GPS , sold to the public, are.

          Well I have one for my running (Garmin ForeRunner 305) and it is usually accurate to 1-5meters (3-18feet). In fact, if I run on one side of a tree going one way, then on the return run on the other side of the tree, I will see that when I upload it to my computer and overlay on Google earth! My wifes driving GPS (Garmin Nuvi 1490LMT) is also very accurate to 1-2 meters (3-7feet).

                Fuelly lets you enter distance travelled since last fill up rather than odometer reading. I use the trip meter for mine, resetting it each time I fill up. If you know how far off your odometer is then you can adjust your numbers before entering them.

                  Great the that will work for me.
                  I'll get signed up tonight.
                  I record all data in a log so I have my last tank info which I will use to get started.

                      I want see what effect your taped wheel covers/wells had on MPG.
                      I work at a company the produces plastic sheet in various gauges so I can get material to make covers, under body pans, air dams, and/or kambacks.

                        So far, with the tape on the wheels (which isnt as good as a harder plastic) I am averaging about .5mpg more than my average. Keep in mind though that at this point, I only have filled up twice since putting on my tape, thus the .5mpg would be said to be "within the noise" of the data......In other words, I will wait a few more fill ups before I know if it is actually making a difference. :laughing4:

                          taped wheels like moon hubcaps? lets see pics. that might look good in stainless steel or crome.

                            OK, joined fuelly and entered first fill up data, but can't get the badge to show up in my sig. any suggestions?

                            It keeps telling me "invalid file".

                            OK, a little playing with the address and I get "Invalid URL", progress?

                              I would like to try something like plastic over the wheel wells but I would want something easily removable with no damage or sticky residue. Maybe something that clips on the inside of the fenderwell bend.

                                I have plastic sheet made from PVC and PVC/acrylic alloy in 5 to 125 mil you pay shipping and its yours. You might even get a choice of color depending upon whats being produced. Better if it thinner gauage so it can be rolled into a tube and mailed. Otherwise, shipping gets to expensive.
                                Then you can design your own wheel well covers.
