I've seen stiff rubber side skirts used on Semi trucks. I guess the benefit of that is if you bottom-out on something it will just bend instead of cracking/breaking like plastic might.

But you make a good point, as low as a festiva is a part of an old rubber conveyor belt would work pretty good, and be pretty resistant to being broke off by bottoming out only limited by how well fastened the skirt was to the car!'93 Blue 5spd 230K(down for clutch and overall maintanence)
