PS CV Axle ?¿?

Maybe I have missed it, but I did search. But here goes, on the PS CV Axle. about mid or half way there is a part/circular item attached. It is on some festivas and not on others. What is it? and what does it do? Is it just a factory thing? Or maybe I am just asking a dumb question, and I am imagining things. But I don't recall ever seeing this on a car that I owned. Anyways, thanks in advance for your responses.

Looks like something good to bang on when the axle is stuck

It works similar to harmonic damper on your engine. The outside is an inertia ring and it vibrates similar to your steering wheel when you have a tire out of balance. The outer ring moves removing energy from the system instead of transmitting.

Nerd Racing is absolutely correct; it's a dynamic balancer.

Some years back, when I repacked my own CV joints, I bought about a dozen balancers new from a Kia dealer. Not sure where they are now, but since rebuilt drive shafts from NAPA and the like are so cheap, I don't bother replacing tired balancers any more.

The reason it's only on the passenger side is that the driver size shaft isn't long enough to set up any serious oscillation.

So, removal of one that looks like someone took a hammer to it would be a good idea? Because, I was going to remove it due to its lack of structural integrity. But I choose to do some research before doing so. It is causing a vibration, but nothing that is crazy, just annoying to someone that is almost OCD. LOL...

If it's not in decent shape, it could be worse that not being there at all, so I'd remove it.

If I run across my bag of new ones one of these years, I'll post some photos of what one looks like. I do recall that they must slip over the end of the driveshaft, which means separating a CV joint from the axle. I don't recall what hold them in proper position on the drivevshaft -- do you see some clips?

And I agree that not having the part on the CV axle, will be better off than having a warped or oblonged one.
