But first, what's he looking for in a commuter car? If he's just looking for a beater that he can run into the ground, then don't let him near a Festy. Let him buy a Honda. If he's looking for something to drive AND fix up and take care of, then by all means you should talk him into one.

Festivas are too rare to be in the hands of someone who doesn't care what they drive.

Those 2 words alone may be cause for concern.

I think I'd let him go with the other suggestions and keep a Festy out of the mix.

Early 90's tercels and paseos are great little cars and sell real cheap. Hondas still have value to them and im afraid to own one because they still are stolen way too often.

True story:
Back in the 90's I was a car salesman, I worked a lot of that time at a Ford dealership in Bellevue, WA. I sold a brand new Festiva to a guy who traded in a beautiful 2 yr old Cadillac Coupe De Ville. I had to ask "why?"
It seems that he had driven a Festiva for a few years and then decided the time was right to move up to a nicer car so he bought the Caddy. He drove the Caddy for about 6 months and decided he didn't like it as much as the Festiva he owned before.
