Took the Festy on a run to pickup a sunroof I bought off Craig's List and got 47.52MPG. I think 50 is possible on a highway only tank. Just in time with gas at $4.09 per gallon.

Bought a set of Ranger headlights for Festy too. Not installed yet, but I like the way they look.

Here in Canada we are at about $1.40 per litre,

My blue one has been averaging that for awhile, Pu241 and I are thinking with some aero mods it can be easily achieved and maintained. I am still awaiting the outcome of all the work I have put into making my 88 carby bring in similar results. Congratulations and keep up the good work.

50 MPG is very possible. Mine got 58.5 @ 55 MPH, and 52.5 @ 60 MPH, with little or no wind. Consistent speed is critical; we lose mileage by slowing down and then having to speed up. Never accelerate up a hill either, only downhill or level.

Make sure your tires are aired up to at least 35, and that your rear wheels spin freely--no brake or bearing drag. Might try blocking off the bottom bumper opening and the area next to the radiator. Are your tires 155s? Wider tires eat up mileage too.

Another factor is what gasoline formulation we are able to get--ethanol is less efficient unfortunately.

I used to get 52-53mpg with mine in mixed driving in the summer no problem. Max was 56.7 mpg. Not sure with interstate driving as there is no interstate on Delmarva...lol
In the process of getting it back on the road...I was shooting for 60mpg with no significant mods except to driving technique.

Make sure your rear brakes or bearings aren't dragging. Also try a can of Seafoam in the gas tank, to clean out the fuel system. Don't forget plug wires when you do that tuneup.

good points Tom! Also I consider a complete tuneup: cap, rotor, wires, plugs, air filter, fuel filter. That will ensure it is at it's prime.

I changed all of those but the plugs. I put in new plugs when I put in the engine a few weeks ago. I did pull the plugs and check them and adjust the gap.

I'm going to inspect the rear brakes today because it sounds like a spring or something is squeaky. When I push the pedal or pull the parking break lever, I hear a creak/squeak from the back end.

Follow up:
I took the wheels off and spun the drums. Passenger side had a scraping sound and driver side would hang up every revolution.
I pulled the drums. The brake shoes were still good and not glazed or anything, so I just took everything apart, reset the adjuster cam, then put it back together.
The wheel bearings still felt good and they only have 60,000 miles on them- maybe less.
The drums now spin free and the wheels will keep going for over 15 seconds if you give them a good spin.

Whats your peak speed during your commute and what do you think your average speed is?
With that kind of MPG, me thinks your cruising at 65-70 MPH.

Which what brand of O2 sensor did you use in your tune-up?
Check your tire pressure and fill to max side wall press, but NO more than that.
You should be seeing 45+

I use 89 octane, but think other see similar results with 87.
