How much was a gallon of gas in 1989 ? 1.19/ gal ??

Even cheaper than that. I found some old fuel receipts, one from the early '90s and one from 1999. I think the early '90s one was $0.899 per gallon, but the one from 1999 was $0.999 cents a gallon and it was for $15 worth of fuel.

I just looked. My 93 has the same one as the first pick and my 92 has one like the second picture. Maybe the build was early enough on the second car to let them use up some old stock covers. Just a thought.

Based on National Averages, mine were lower because I lived in a rural area but here they are:

88 was $1.08, mine was $0.89/gal
89 was $1.12
90 was $1.16
91 was $1.21
92 was $1.05
93 was $1.07

It was interesting to see in 90 and 91 it went up a bit, then dropped in 92 again. Usually election years had a small impact on gas prices back then.

Wow, good info ! I remember figuring how long it would take for the festiva to pay back its original purchase price @ $1.30/gal. It's far exceeded those projections by a long shot !!

90 and 91 would have been the first Persian Gulf war, which was why the prices spiked. I remember when I got my first Festiva in 98, I could fill it from flat dead empty for 9 bucks. Ahh, the good old days.

For a real comparison, you must adjust the cost per gallon for the year in question by the annual inflation for the periods compared to determine the real difference in cost per gallon.
For example: In 1969 I remember paying .349 per gallon for regular.
My last fillup was 3.749
The annual overall inflation rate for the period 1969 thru 2010 was 4.50%.
A 1969 Dollar was worth 6.08 in 2010.
So multiply .349 * 6.08 = 2.12192
If gas prices had increased by only the inflation rate, the price would be $2.12192
instead of $3.749.
3.749 / 2.12192 = 1.76679

End result: True gas prices in 2011 are 1.76679 times what they were in 1969.
Putting it another way gas prices are about 176.68% of what they were 1969.

If gas prices drop to $2.12 today it would be like paying .349 in 1969.

I believe this increase will seem mild in the coming decade as the world's oil supplies continues to be depleted.

Yup exactly, heres some food for thought, a couple years ago a barrel of crude oil was $120 (approx.) and gas prices (in canada) were approx. $1 per litre.. now, a barrel of oil is approx $100 with gas prices reaching $1.30 per litre (approx)

Now try and tell me we're not getting screwed hard and dry.... the oil companies saved money by not supplying the lube

In 68 i worked at the local Skelly full service station, price of a gallon of Reg was .22 and if we had a gas war in town it was .17 thats from back in the day when premium was called Hi test or Ethel.
