  • The Festiva's old arthritic brother.

Ladies? And gentleman, I present to you. The 1980 Ford Fiesta.

The magnificent 61hp 1.6L OHV carbureted engine and 4spd gearbox.

Picking it up next week hopefully, I've got some gray seats out of my old Escort that are in mint condition I'll probably throw in it, remove the bumpers, get some 14" steelies to replace the 12"s, fix whatever is broken, and drive that %^&. I might throw a Zetec in it if I feel like it someday, but I like it just the way it is.

I still want a Festiva, but this came up. I actually stopped because I thought it was a Civic. :banghead:

Anyways, this should be a fun project now that the Saab is out of the way. I can't wait to tear into it, I was told it ran well when parked a few years ago, but the plates suggest it's been off the road since '92. :|

I thought the original 1.6 OHV was rated at 66hp?

            Looks quite restorable! Good luck!

The 1.6 OHV Kent is one of the best engines ever made. In England, they run them in the classic Cortinas, Escorts & Anglias. With a ported cross-flow head, cam, header & side draft Webers they get 175-200 hp naturally aspirated pretty consistently.

.... Correct me if I'm wrong: The good one's were made in Germany and the NOT so good one's were made here in the U.S. As I recall there was a problem with the motor. Seams to me the problems were with the HEADS and the CAMSHAFTS or there abouts?

I thought they were all made in Germany.

I do know Rabbits were first made in Germany, but then beginning with the square headlight versions were made in the USA. Are you sure you're not recalling the VW manufacture "story?"

Or are you talking just about the 1.6 Kent engine? (Which I would have thought were made in England.)

.... At this point I can't say. Maybe someone else can clarify these points.

I do know that when Rabbits began being built in the US, some of the car writers complained the suspension got too soft.

200 HP NA? That's pretty awesome for a 1.6. In that car, you would never need more! You'd be the fastest thing on four wheels until you hit that 4th gear's limit. What's the top speed listed on that thing anyway?

@ boydg1 - They made the Mk1 Fiesta in Germany, Spain, and England. All our cars came from Germany. The Kent engine I believe was always built in England. So I'm not quite sure where you got your info.

@ DriverOne - According to what I have found, depending on the engine, top speed was 80-100mph or so. Since all we got was the top of the range motor, the top speed would be at 100. Not that I'd ever go anywhere near that fast on 12" tires, but it's nice to know I could!

I'm looking into a 5spd swap, they put CVH engines into the Mk2, which was nearly identical except for the front design, and even a Zetec. So there is definitely potential for a lot of improvement in this little kraut rocket!
