Anyone on here ever owned a mk1 rabbit or golf? It seems like the more work I plan and do to my festy, the more it starts looking like a mk1 vw. Probably doesn't help that I'm constantly lurking on vwvortex in the mk1 forums. I'd like to have one someday but don't know about the reliability of them. Had a corrado a number of years ago and it ended up being a headache in a short time. Guess I just have a soft spot for old boxy hatches

Oh here we go again................
I drove a rabbit (1979) for a while and loved it. It had a newer gti golf motor and nitrous, so it was funner than a stock one.
Just put vw emblems and honda emblems on your car.-Greg

^I'm not gonna be getting a rabbit/golf any time soon if that's what you're thinking though (probably will never get one). I just like what people are doing with them on the vw siteLast edited by lanemeyer14; 09-16-2011, 01:37 PM."Lane, I've been going to this high school for seven and a half years. I'm no dummy."

I own a '78 Mk I Rabbit 2 door.
It's been sitting inside since 1991. The motor spun a rod bearing. The old EFI had been replaced with a Weber carb. It's a 4 -speed manual. It got 28 mpg, handled great, and pulled strong from 0 to 95 mph. 95 was it's top.
I'm a member of VWvortex, but haven't been there in years.
Someday, maybe I'll find a good 1.7 liter short block out of an Omni/Horizon. That would bolt-in, IIRC.
I think the car has major mice damage, but I haven't looked at it in a long time.
In my opinion, the Mazda 121 design is superior to the Mk I. I know my Festiva rides better and out handles the Mk I, but I've done some suspension upgrades to the Festiva. I rode in a new GTI VW back in 1984. The owner drove crazy, and that car would really handle.
The MK I is just cool, though, great retro look. Mines got the round headlights.'88 Festiva L, stock carby engine (with exhaust upgrade), 4 speed tranny. Aspire Struts and Springs, Capri 14" wheels, interior gutted, battery in back

Old bunnies are cool, but I wouldn't trade a Festiva for one.Festiva: Because even my dog can build a Honda.

I bought a 1977 Rabbit brand new back in the day. Stupidest decision I ever made. It was ok car, the early versions of those engines though didnt last over 120k miles. Way too expensive to rebuild, used engine only way to go. They changed oiling or something in mid or late 80s that greatly improved engine durability of gas engines, the diesels always lasted well. And never ever get an early Rabbit with an automatic. The automatic transmission is actually quite durable, but you will go bankrupt from replacing Bosch (German for expensive) starters. They stuck the dang thing on backside of engine right up close and personal to exhaust manifold. The starter on the manual tranny Rabbits was on front of engine and would last nearly life of the car.
Oh yea, brakes on these left something to be desired.
