Has anyone actually comtemplated or tried to swap the kia 1.8L? I can't quite afford it right now, but if another kia like this comes up for sale in a couple months, would it be worth the time to try it? nobody talks about swapping these engines, and I'm wondering why? The escort gt's/323's/capris are all but extinct, at least, I have never seen one IRL that I recall.

&%(*' I looked it up, and it also shares the same bolt pattern as an aspire! New source for rims! I'm really starting to like these kia's I'm seeing.
What's the 'big' deal about obd-II? If we're talking about a full swap of the drivetrain and all. All of the aftermarket stuff still works with it right? I figured they would have more stuff for an obd-II vehicle? I'm thinking about getting ahold of the guy to see if he would take any trades..or something.2008 Kia Rio- new beater

Yes, Kia Sephia rims are bolt on. Rios too. Early ones had 13" later had 14". Some may have 15".
Someone has used Kia BPs in a swap. I imagine they'd strip the engine of any sensors that are exclusive to OBD-II unless they could wire them in. May not be that difficult. A bare BP should be a bare BP. I could be wrong.
As in the Proteges, look to 1995 as being a possible "transition year" that may not have all the OBD-II stuff in place and could be simpler. Just a theory.

The 98's were all supposed to have 14" rims I think (from edmunds.) Anyway, I've got these ideas in my head and I don't want to just spit it out for fear of making myself look like a complete rtard, I'm just a little rtard k. I'm just trying to get a good sense of what is practical and purposeful toward my goals for now until I can actually start piecing things together. It would be a complete teardown and rebuild tho, so if swapping out an entire wiring harness is what needs to be done, with this car, it could be right? I have to paint anyway so the stuff has to come out either way. I'm just worried about the wiring for stuff like headlights and radiator fans really, I'm not sure how that would work out, since I've never done an engine swap before, then throw obd-II into it and I don't even know if existing wiring will work or if the whole car would need rewired. I left a message with that guy, if the car is in decent shape I'm going to see if I can talk him down to 4-500 and maybe get it.Last edited by zoom zoom; 12-25-2011, 07:27 AM.2008 Kia Rio- new beater

The 95 protege appears to be pretty much the same as the 96, only I think it just has one o2 sensor. I was lookin into a swap from one on a carbed festy. Seems to me that it would be simpler just to pull the whole engine harness and all from the kia and just use it. Only things that would need to be spliced would be ignition switch, fuel pump, and some power for the ecu I believe.89 L, hopefully returning from the dead soon with a little more power...

Alright guys I've been seriously considering this, I talked to my fiance, and the guy called back today about it, and I'm supposed to go meet him and check it out wednesday. IF the car is in decent shape, other than the clutch, I may well buy this car if everything goes right. We'll see what happens by the end of the week I suppose, thanks for the replies!2008 Kia Rio- new beater

.... This is all starting to sound VERY interesting. I personally would be interested in converting the 96 Kia Sephia over to a CARBE (WEBBER). You would need a intake manifold for the carb. And my preference would be an external fuel pump instead of the one in the tank since the engine is NOT set up for a mechanical fuel pump. Do away with most of the ECS. Just some thoughts!!!
