B6 Exhaust Piping?

The exhaust in front of the rear tire is not the best way to extract power, but the differences, including the heat to the tire, are so little that it's only worth considering if you plan on driving to the moon.

Dr Dan...start lookin' for a cheap high flow muffler that has the same outside dimensions as the stock cat. Maybe a 2" core turbo. I'm on this Nascar style outlet.
It will go in front of the right rear trailing arm. It will be the lowest point on the floor pan, so running over things in the road will have to be considered.
I could go heavy duty, and make it a skid plate.
Or light weight, and cheap to replace.
What do you think of exhaust in front of the rear tire in general? I don't think it would mess up our rims. It's not like we're running gold plated wire spokes.

I had another thought!
I've seen a couple of pics go by with the exhaust outlet in front of the right rear tire. The outlets are flat ovals like Nascar style. I'll look for the pics and some info about this.
The "cat" could be a 2 1/2" core stock oval muffler or canister muffler, with one of these race car outlets angled back. Super flow, simple, and quiet.

I was leanin' towards the Bosal pipe, I think its a little bigger in diameter.
Now the next thing is to have flanges welded onto the ..."cat"... I have picked out.

Yep. You'll need the donut thing. It's on the stock B3 headpipe. Bosal pipe looks good to me.

That Bosal will work fine. I think the thing on the end is a donut gasket which seals it to the cat. I had to get one at an exhaust place after I bought the pipe. Good luck with your install, you're gonna love the way it runs. Mine's not what you would call fast, but it outclasses a B3 with a feedback carb by a hundred miles.

Good news to hear about the 323 downpipe, zoe.
That is the pipe I was asking about!
I am looking at 2 pipes, a Walker brand, and a Bosal brand. The Bosal is cheaper, but it has this thing on the end...looks like a metal "donut".
The Walker doesnt have it?
I am wondering what that is?

Yeah, that's the one. I ordered qne for an '89 323 SOHC. Really worked out well for me. Had the flange for the spring bolts to the cat and everything. Only thing that didn't work was the brace that bolts to the engine and clamps to the pipe. I threw it away. Too bad they discontinued them. I couldn't believe how cheap it was.Last edited by zoe60; 05-20-2012, 10:29 AM.

Zoe, was that 323 downpipe from the early model 323?
I'm running late 323 downpipes on both my 1994 323/B6 swaps. The shop had to weld on a cat connection both times. I bet yours is for the '86 to '89 323s.

I have a 323 manifold and I bought a downpipe from Rockauto for a 323. It bolted up to my festiva cat like it was made for it. Mines single wall and was 19.99 but I looked and they don't got 'em no mo. My exhaust is completely stock from the cat on back. If it wasn't nearly new I might look for something bigger. I sure like the factory look of it though.Last edited by zoe60; 05-19-2012, 07:10 PM.

..but it still doesnt add up to the sellers stated 2 1/2 OD.
The actual exhaust pipe is the 1 3/4 dia inside, and theres another pipe swaged onto it as an insulator, which is where the 2.5 OD comes from.Last edited by Christ; 05-17-2012, 07:08 PM.
