  • Finding Festivas ...

So I was on a long motorcycle trip this weekend, some of it with a group, all of it with my wife on pillion. We were riding through Virginia, North Carolina, and East Tennessee.

I've made it a habit now, that anytime I see a Festiva on the road or in a yard or peeping out of an old barn, I stand up on the pegs, point to it, and shout "Fes TEEEE vaaaaaaaaaa!" If there's anyone around, I'm sure they wonder what I'm doing, but it's fun and Fay enjoys it.

I did it about 6 times in 20 miles in Tennessee. There sure are a lot of derelict Festivas down there, complete ones obviously not on the road but sitting around in people's yards looking fairly complete.

My own little Festiva is running well, always starts, always idles, always gets good gas mileage, asks for little in return. I've just this week put 50,000 miles on it total since I bought it in late 2008, and it's been a good 'un.

I'm still sort of looking for a nice one, or one that can be turned nice very easily. My one has no rust on it and runs good, but it would take quite a bit to put it back to "stock restored", and in my opinion it needs to either:

    1) Be driven and enjoyed like it is
    2) Bought by someone who would upgrade it to what they want and drive it.

If anyone has, or knows of, a close-to-stock, non-rusty, nice condition Festiva with a 5-speed and AC, let me know. If a trade was involved, I'd be generous ....

Paul has very good luck or maybe it's very good diligence finding them in your general area and you can also put a wanted ad on craigslist and other site. I have even offered finders fee for people who don't own one but know where they are. Good luck on your quest I know how it is. Time is money. I would love to do the ground up full custom job but everyday that goes by when a festye is not running I stand to lose 8 to 10 dollars a day in fuel cost to drive something else. This is why so many members have multiple cars

Bodywork is my weakness so if I have a straight body I have no problem driving it everyday and adding parts are replacing components week by week. Other people can do body work very quickly but cannot stand a messed up interior and would not consider the car. Interior to me is remove and replace just like suspension an engine parts

Thanks and that's all good advice. If I had the time and skill to do the work myself, I'd probably start with the car I have; it's not rusty and runs good, I've had a new timing belt, water pump, front axles, and rear bearings in it in the last year or so, but to get it like I'd want it, it would need paint, new interior, new dash, passenger window regulator, windshield washer tank ... I'm just not up for it and would rather start with something that needs less.

There are dozens ok well documented instructions on how to do various projects on your car on the site righr here. Pick something you are not very comfortable with, do a search look it up, get a friend or family member to come over. Sometimes I don't know how to do something just the part of someone standing there with the other set of eyes motivated to complete it by myself. I am remodeling my sink and cabinets in the kitchen and I have 0 experience. I buy beer and feed the guys you know how and I just want them to stand there and tell me what to do, I save a grip of money and I learn something new and everyone wins. So again pick something on your car right now that is really bugging you and ask for help

Good idea! but the problem is, I need a car to drive, not a project to work on. I have 6 motorcycle projects in the shop right now, along with a Morgan 4/4 that's been on the "to do" list for 10 years now ..... so something that I can get and farm out whatever work needs to be done would be the business right now ....

I'm out this weekend, but if that car is a 5-speed and is still there Monday, it's mine ....

Gone already! It was an automatic, though, but will make a good car for someone .....
