Are you comfortable spending $175 on a block, crank, and head casting? Actually, depending on how bad, there may be no head casting, either.
Break it open before you buy it, so you can inspect the damage. You may only have to replace a few valves, or it may just be a junk engine worth a core charge for a rebuild candidate.

What's the core charge on one of these? And I offered him 50 for it I'm gonna go check it out though this weekend.91' Festiva GL Auto EFI--- BP swapped, G-Series swap in the works.

Well, if he's the one that said it's got bent valves, you might be able to play him off to get a really cheap engine that only needs a timing belt and water pump to run.
Core on an engine is usually ~$100 from junkyards. Retailers value them by the type and year of the engine.

ALL B series are non-interference.

Early EGT's are 1.9's. The 94-98 EGT are 1.8 DOHC (BP), and IIRC, after that they started using the Zetec/Duratec blocks. But those aren't called GT's, they're ZX2, etc.
The 1.9 continued to be used in all non-GT models for... well, ever, until the Escort moniker died with the ZX2 generation.Last edited by Christ; 06-29-2012, 03:29 AM.

Now the EARLY EARLY GTs from '90 on back might have a 1.9 CVH HO engine. But if its a '91-'96, its would be a BP, which means non-interference which means valves wouldn't be damaged if the timing belt broke. I'm betting its a CVH and not a BP, and yes, when the belts die in those, valves get smacked around. Any chance you can post a pic of the motor in question, we can ID it pretty easily on here.No festiva for me ATM...

It was probably a 1.9 from an escort with a spoiler and because of the spoiler, he's thinking it was gt!?
I guess that 1.9 was pretty anemic, they say it was rated at 110 hp, but some say it only put out as little as 90 hpLast edited by iceracerdude; 06-29-2012, 05:52 AM.

If its SOHC, it's a 1.9. 90and earlier used the 1.9 HO in GT models. I've owned three, the same engine was used in the 2nd gen (?) EXP (which is not an escort as much as the CRX is not a Civic.)
The 1.9 was anemic, but as with most most factory castrated engines, minor headwork and a cam really open it up, and the stock bottom end can handle 15psi readily.

ok so i got some questions , first... if it isnt the BP will it still fit in a festiva? also if it is what is a reasonable price to pay for it? does 175 sound good? and when i pick it up form it guy (if i do) how sould i transport it? its just the engine, and i only gotta drive about an hour at the most with it.91' Festiva GL Auto EFI--- BP swapped, G-Series swap in the works.
