Looks like someone repainted it? The lower COBRA letters don't appear to be factory, or the color. Does it have a brushed aluminum dash panel and door panels?
I had a '77 with t-tops and 302/C4. All Mustang II's and Pintos were 4 lug...if you can find a 9" rear from a Maverick or '69 Mustang, it will bolt in place of the 8" rear. The C4 bellhousing, Tq conv and flexplate are smaller to fit in the chassis. Also, the oil pan, pickup tube, exhaust manifolds and radiator are unique to the M2 V8's. I've swapped 2V Cleveland heads onto a 302 in mine, and its next to impossible to fit exhaust. I would stick with a 347 stroker and aftermarket aluminum heads or GT40s. I haven't even taken delivery on it yet, guys! Jeeze... glad it's well received around here, though.
Just after posting the picture on my FB, I started getting random texts from guys offering everything from bikes to trucks for it, but nothing that specifically piqued my interest.
Yes, it's the original paint, although it may not be an original Cobra. The white lines have been painted/repainted, but everything else appears correct for a worn-in neglected 40ish year old car with a poor maintenance history.
It has the Cobra finned aluminum valve covers on it, but the intake is not original, so no telling by that. The exhaust manifolds are original, the exhaust is non-crossover duals with side exits and glass packs. Appears to be 2.25. It has a MEAN exhaust note.
I honestly can't remember if it's a brushed dash or not, but it does have a tach in it and the 3 offset dummy gauges in the center.
If it turns out to not be a Cobra, I'll just finish the conversion since so much of it is done already.
I do plan on upgrading it, so it's more of a resto-mod deal than anything. I don't mind drum rears, but I know plenty of options for disc brakes that can easily be swapped in, and I never saw much of a point to specifically keeping w/ the 9" rears besides gearing options... and really, how many times are you gonna change your gears? The Explorer 8.8" with discs also gives you LSD with your 3.55's, and I know for a fact it can handle more power than that 302 is willing to reliably put out in it's current state.
Any mid-size GM with the same bolt pattern gives you a weight reduction on the rear rotors and with light work, a caliper that uses the cable directly instead of Ford and other makers' ridiculous drum-in-disc parking brake setup. Won't be the first time I've used Grand Prix calipers and rotors on a Mustang.
The PO before the guy I bought it from was fat. FAT. Normally, that would hold no significance to me, except he broke the lean function on the front driver's seat. Not only that, but he apparently felt the stock rear leafs weren't good enough, and rigged up a set of coil-overs on the shocks using the lower sections of GM-style exhaust clamps mated together with bolts. I'll get a pic once I get it to the house. It's rather ingenious, actually.
Most/many of the upgrades I do will simply come from swapping parts from newer models that are more advanced tech. I'm also looking for an electronic locking TC that fits the trans behind the 302, or I may swap to a E4OD/etc. to get overdrive and a lockup converter.Last edited by Christ; 09-10-2012, 03:54 AM.

Sounds like your on the right track. I still have a ton of parts (even a full Cobra II interior), to bad your not closer, lol. BTW, with 351W heads, mild cam, intake, headers and a 3.50TL 8" pumpkin from an old Falcoln, my little M2 was easily as fast as my '04 "bolt-on" GT. I beat several cars that were running high 13's.Brian
