  • carby festiva fuel system basic layout?

Hey everyone.. I got a 88 lx (sittin in the lap of luxury, I know) and I also found a '93 escort and snapped that up as well for potential engine swap since the fastiva was listed as not running right and is missing the wire from distributor to coil, and leaking oil from several orifices. But anyway I'm trying to figure out how the fuel system is going to work. The escort uses an in tank high pressure fuel pump and a return fuel system. Fuel flows from the tank pump to the regulator mounted on the fuel rail, and the regulator returns excess fuel to the tank. Now, every carb'd vehicle I've ever had did not use this system. they use one fuel line, a mechanical fuel pump, and no return.

The thing is, from looking at the fastiva, it appears it uses a mechanical fuel pump but also has a return line. Am I mistaken? Its dark out and there is a massive rats nest of vaccuum tubing running everywhere.

I see people suggest that the tank be swapped for a fuel injection tank, along with the pump, but I dont really think thats necessary.... I may need to add a drop in or inline walbro or something, and possibly add a return line, but thats easy stuff. I'm just trying to figure out what I have to work with here.

You are correct. The 88 carby fuel pump is a diaphram pump with three ports, located near the last eccentric lobe of the camshaft. It has a fuel discharge line to the carb, an inlet line from the fuel filter, plus a return fuel line to the top of the gas tank. It must be a very effective diaphram pump to have a return fuel line!

I can pull the interia switch off the escort and wire it into the switch ignition using a relay and a fuse. Not a problem. If its set up with just a draw straw from the factory then it sounds like an inline fuel injection like a walbro (or any of the frame rail pumps off the early ford fuel injected pumps) would work, the latter possibly coming from the junkyard). I'll have to look at the straw setup but may be able to adapt the escort pump to work as a drop in. I'll have to spend some more time on this one. If I find a fuel injected festiva tank I may pick it up just to save time.
