Well, the point was to make people buy new cars, not really help gas mileage or the environment in any way. All a part of "saving the (United) auto (Workers) industry" Lol. Ironically the most bought vehicle during C4C was the F150, from a company that didn't take any of the bailout money.
I might get one of the split ports and see if I can remedy the head issues. Then again it might be throwing money away when there are better engines in the yard. I'm still seriously considering selling my Z to fund Festiva stuff..
Cash for clunkers was the biggest scam in the world. People around here took in old muscle cars that others would not pay their unreasonable asking price for and junked them. There is a whole row of bring- tears- to -your -eyes cars at the other yard. Cameos by a gnx, fairlane, Thunderbird, and chevelle ss. A local saved the belvadere at the gate ( thank goodness).
Do not bother with the split port engine. If it has dropped the valve seat, it needs a rebuilt head and a piston at the least. Then chances are the cylinder wall is all chewed up...etc
Rebuilt heads are all over eBay anyway.

I don't know where you got your information, but it is NOT correct. The following is the eligibility requirements for Cash for clunkers. Your car had to get worse than 18MPG combined to qualify, and couldn't be older than 1984:
Basic Eligibility Requirements (Source: http://www.edmunds.com/car-news/cash...ulus-bill.html )
Trade-in Vehicle
- Is in drivable condition
- Has been both continuously insured, consistent with the laws of your State, and continuously registered to the same owner for at least one year immediately prior to the trading-in of your vehicle under the CARS program
- Manufactured less than 25 years before the date of trade in (i.e., before mid- to late-1984) and, in the case of category 3 trucks, not later than model year 2001
- Has a combined MPG of 18 or less (this does not apply to category 3 trucks, i.e., very large pickup trucks and cargo vans)
htchbck, i'm glad you cleared that up about Ford not taking the money, i had read in one of the business rags from New York City that Ford had infact taken the Feds money and it was recieved and absorbed through Ford Motor Credit.
An idea can turn to dust or magic, depending on the talent that rubs against it.
