This man(Ernst) is making these pieces on his own, there is probably very little profit in it for him. It is too cost prohibitive for him to offer insurance. He is offering these parts to the American Festiva community because we cannot get them here. You got a rather inexpensive fiberglass part that was damaged during shipping(not Ernsts fault imo) and you expect him to pay you for the cost of the materials to fix the part? Let me ask you. Which part of "Caveat Emptor" dont you understand? Also quitcherbitchin before you fix it so NOONE can get impossible to find parts (broken during shipping or not)!

I understands both sides of this story, its a crappy situation. As Monsoon said i think this is more of a hobby for Ernst and not a business venture its a labor of love and we really need to appreciate the service jun and Ernst are offering to us. I think this is why festiva motorsport is no longer. I dont think it was Roger's bread and butter it was more of a labor of love, I think it turned in to more trouble then it was worth and he called it quits. I would not rock the boat, Lesson learned. Going forward i would offer Ernst more money for shipping material, or take a gamble and hope for the best. Maybe Ernst can find a new shipper that can offer insurance? I order stuff from china and it comes EMS (overseas) and gets delivered here by DLH. Maybe they can offer insurance?

Ernst: Why not give a "with insurance" and a "without insurance price". That way the customer can choose his price and risk. I'd almost bet no one would buy it at the insurance price. But lots would buy it at the lower price. Any thoughts?Jerry

i inquired before thru DHL, whoa! triple the cost and lots of necessary things needed. too complicated. if my bumper was selling for $249. shipping would be $600 just for it plus the item cost. but that would be put in a crate. the crate itself since its wood, needs to go to a process, i think fumigation process. that would be an additional cost too. imagine you purchase a chin only, is it worth the pay or you will just repair it in case of damage?Our Prides w/ pride! What monsoon is trying to say is. This isn't a business per say. Its a guy over seas doing it for fun. We understand both sides but dont rock the boat so much that he stops shipping the kits. cause that would be bad....

repairing a fiberglass item should not be an issue. if that's pulverized and no traces just ashes and fibers then get back on me. one of my reason too why i don't sell carbon stuffs. its a lot of process to make and will took long process too to repair it.Last edited by ernst; 11-28-2012, 10:50 PM.Our Prides w/ pride! Ernst, I think what Jake is saying by it costing him $100 to get it fixed, that is with him taking it somewhere to fix it. I could see this price being quoted, costs in the states are, I assume, a lot more than the Phillippines. I'm assuming that either Jake doesn't have to tools or knowledge to fix it himself.
Jake, I think what Ernst is saying is insurance is even more than the part costs. Not having any experience in international shipping, I have no idea what insurance is involved or available. I also don't know what shipping services are available.
To the both of you, a suggestion to fix the broken part AND to upgrade the chin by making it stronger without adding a lot of weight. My buddy builds high dollar drag racing cars, which often use lightweight fiberglass or carbon fiber parts. One thing manufacturers will use foam rod or tape to form a raised section to help support the panel (usually a hood or other large flat surface).
Backer Rod is used to put into a large crack in a wall or concrete gap before caulking it up. This is so you don't have to fill the crack with a bunch of caulk. It comes in different diameters.
Foam tape has a removable paper backing that covers a stickey backing to stick it to somthing, usually used for weatherstripping. It comes in different widths and thicknesses.
After getting the pieces stuck back together I would take a couple pieces of backer rod into the groove on the back side the length of the chin, then cut some strips of fiberglass cloth and cover the backer rod. Basically boxing in the bottom by attaching the bottom to the vertical back of the chin. This would fix Jake's broken part as well as make it much stronger. It would also make Ernst's new parts stronger by adding minimal weight to the part.
In my opinion, a partial refund would be in order, say maybe whatever the price of materials to fix it would cost here in the states from say, a body shop material supply store. I'm guessing it would be around $40 (and I'm just pulling that number out of thin air, could be a bit more or less). Jake wouldn't be out any more money in getting the part fixed, Ernst's reputation would be repaired, and Jake would learn a new skill, which even had the piece been delivered flawless, might get broken on a parking block or curb and you'd have to remove or fix it anyway.1963 Fairlane - future NSS drag car
