    A 89 auto delivering newspapers ...
we have been discussing reliability, cost per mile
insurance ( I put full coverage on her ) and fuel cost..

A stick does not hold up on these stop and go steep hills.
Paper loads are not legal to discuss

And just tonight this .. The cop left his contact info, but damage
is cosmetic...tough for an older loved car...

    It was so cute...until now.

Is there a better car for low cost, cost per industrial mile
and auto fuel economy than our festy autos??

    Under the gun...literally!!

Are you high? I get plenty of life out of 5 speeds, pulling plenty of weight, on hills. Get with the stick shift man!

I love my 5 speed but my daughter drives an auto. After a couple cancer surgeries she will not be learning a stick, the auto is the first step in getting
              her mobile again.

That's what I was thinking. Automatic Chevy Sprints get something around 38-43+ according to 3cylinderperformance forums (atleast that's what they claim), and I remember our '92 Metro 4-door getting an average of 36-38.

What about some older Civics, or a Geo Storm? I think Storms were pretty decent on mileage.

But yes, there are a MULTITUDE of better-mpg autos out there, though I think a properly-cared-for auto Festy will be the cheapest in maintenance. If mine wasn't such a beater, I'd almost guarantee maintenance cost would be oil every 5k and tires. Instead, I have brake failure, ball joint failure, transmission leaks, engine leaks, antifreeze leaks, gas leaks... uhh..

You get the picture lol. :p

Oh oh yeah. One more thing. Wheel bearing failure every 4k.

Okay, my daughter called last night when it happened and it sounded really bad, like it accidently went through the car crushers bad!!
The state investigator came by the shop at about noon and we went to look at it. The bumper got a little nudge, no cracks..nothing to worry about.
The car is fine, no report filed other than yes it happened.

This still left numbers and a discussion on the table. It takes two of them and the paper company will not let them take any more routes, they have four.
We did the math and as an independent contractor they make 5 bucks an hour ....total !! Even if we put them in a pedal car or a golf cart this is not
a job they should keep...even considering our daughters condition there should be something else she can transport or do that would make more
                    than minimum wage.

They love the car, and from my end of things that is good , they will take better care of it. There is not much else as inexpensive and fun to keep on the road! My mom has a sprint auto and they are tough but ....You just don't have a great big grin on your face while driving one of those! That grin means a lot!!

Food delivery is easy as pie, and pay pretty well. Raised two kids on it and auto repair work.

BTW, you didn't mention it was for your daughter, you said it wouldn't handle a load on hills!

Thanks for the idea's, a change is really needed, this morning the paper is trying to get them to sign a year contract, it looks like if they were unable to complete the contract they would be responsible to hire a replacement to fulfill the contract...some of these news papers are really corrupt!!

Some food delivery have there own cars and drivers..that would be okay too..if they have autos!!

The replacement would cost $8.50 as an employee and car-fuel would have to be provided on top of that! They bring in $5.something as a subcontractor...
                          evil-corrupt-criminal newspapers!!

Our local paper is now just delivered with the mail. I'm guessing they've signed some contract with USPS..

My old 94 Protege with a B8/ATX would pull 34 mpg all day long. Hills, wind, temp......didn't seem to matter. Relatively comfortable, dependable, plenty of room, fun to drive, etc.. All around impressive car.
