We talk about this stuff all the time on another forum I'm on. Sadly its even stricter in some of the bigger areas. When the Aussie guys told us what they had to go through it made California seem like a walk in the park. However the bright side of it was that it made them take the engines that we considered "crap" and do some WILD things with them.

Please censor this thread.... language not approprate outside the arena.

other than that, i agree that the restrictions are retarded. if it passes a sniffer, it should be fair game.

sorry. i was just a little annoyed at the time.. i do apologize.. censor away. just was so annoyed about it.. but i guess if it's engineered, then that means the turbo stuff comes later, as it's already been engineered, but possibly for only that engine and another VASS visit.. but then again the engine did come with option of turbo or non-turbo, so technically it's an option to an already engineered engine..

Some states do require vehicle inspections. I choose to live in a place that does not have emission or vehicle inspections. Here's an example for you. These are both AMC Eagles. The first pic is what the car would look like from the factory. The second after heavy modifications. Solid front axle, custom coilover front suspension, Chevy 5.3L engine and 35" tires. I just go to the tag office hand them a check for $49 and walk out with a tag for the year. Heck they don't even ask for a copy of you insurance here in Tennessee.

                              We're fairly lenient over here.
Only a handful of counties in Texas require ESM inspection (emissions). Just high population areas such as Dallas, Austin, and Houston.

They don't care about engine swaps or mods as long as it's all legal and the original safety equipment required at time of manufacture is still there. Any classic car (25 years or older) is exempt from emissions.

We have a this- we pay taxes on roads, so if you have the know how to build your own car and the guts to drive it, you're allowed to register it.

Fees here aren't too bad. Annual inspection is about $40 (emissions or not). Registration is about $70 for passenger cars and light trucks.
I just registered my aqua and it cost $176 and that's including title transfer, sales tax, and $50 30 days delinquent fee for not registering it within 30 days of purchase.

The Aussie regulations remind me a bit of CARB. Even changing the plastic intake piping in California can be illegal. It's ridiculous.

Re: don't know if this is already here, but it seems like it's been written...

South Carolina has to be the most lenient state I know. There are no emissions laws, and you don't need to register some trailers unless you want to insure them. The kinds of vehicles that are on the roads, though... Some of them scare me. Vehicles that have been in wrecks that deployed the airbags and smashed the entire front end are still driving. People strap driving lights to the hood or bumper and keep driving them. On the other hand, there is a guy around here with a monster truck Camaro...
