      to answer the last question, no, not possible without severe trans damage.
      Trees aren't kind to me...

      currently: 2 88Ls (Scrappy and Jersey), 88LX, 90L(Pepe), 91L, 91GL (Skippy) 93 GL Sport (the Mighty Favakk), 94 (Bruce) & 95 Aspire SEs, 97 Aspire (The Joker),
      94 Justy 4WD, 87 Fiero GT, plus 2 parts cars. That's my fleet.

        Alright, so the starter has a solenoid that pulls on the bendix and pushes the starter gear out to the flywheel. The solenoid also makes high current electrical contact for the starter to turn... It wouldn't turn if the solenoid isn't working so that leads me to believe that the bendix isn't pushing the starter gear out. Take off the starter and inspect. Swap with another if you have one laying around.
