  • california vs federal? festiva

Hi im in oregon looking for my first festiva does anyone know if california festivas are different at all from federal ones. Willing to drive a bit for a decent car

They require a different cat if it needs replaced and you still live there. They are cheap if they fail emissions down there.

The carbed festiva were a little different. The 4-speed trannys were different as were the egr valves, I believe.

just in early '88 models... mid and late '88MY festys are 50 state units (all the same)

'89 and up are also 50 state units (all the same)

i found this hard to believe but according to this page from a factory repair manual all you need to make your 88 calif into a 49er or vice versa is to switch a wire?

I hadn't seen that, what do you bet that the California calibrations get poor fuel economy because of the retarded timing!?

You could set the California setting ahead by adjusting the timing up so that it equals fed spec. Then unplug the jumper for high altitude
or just wire it to a switch! Gotta beat them at their own game somehow!

that's for the FBC... the timing is set by the dizzy, it's weight springs and vaccum advance, the dizzy isn't PCM controlled like with the EFI cars. the calibration could only effect the fuel curve and EGR activation.
