I have a kid on the way, and combined with 2 from her previous, we're going with a 09 or newer journey.

Only headache I don't want is transmission and major engine issues. (crank mostly), head and accessories are manageable.

Tires, brakes, hoses, light bulbs fuses, relays, seats, buttons, etc etc, I can manage with those easily.

Bank just wants 80k or less.

Take a look at a 98-02 Mercedes E320 wagon. Very reliable if the maintenance is done properly. The only down side is that you HAVE to use factory oil filters, the autoparts store brands are paper and fall apart.

Well i got a 2000 jetta with only 140k miles on it with recent mandatory 100k+ stuff done recently (Timing belt Tensioner Water pump Drive belt Thermostat Ball joints Control arms Tie rods Motor mounts)

Its a 5 speed so no transmission worries there.

best of all my wife fits between the two car seats

its loaded power sunroof monsoon audio ( gotta replace some speakers ) with the alloy wheels not the steel ones its nice =) comfy too.

bad thing is making my fluid kit for the trunk
25 dollar PSF , 30 dollar coolant. lol

We have a 2001 Hyundai Accent 4 door we bought it brand new... the thing is so reliable, even after we had to take it in to fix the crank trigger ignition sensor!

Saabs a re really cool cars from an engineering standpoint.But can be a Nightmare with repairs. VW's- My friend bought a used 2012 GTI last year with 50K on it. I kept telling him he should get a MAZDA 6 (he loves them) but he wanted the VW Auto gearbox really bad.Long story short on week 3 of ownership he comes over to me and says my car ran out of oil drool Come to find out the car uses 1Qt of oil every 1K. If he baby's it he can get 1.5K before the light comes on. The SAD thing is VW says this is acceptable (and thus wont do a recall). Go on their forum,many many VW owners have this same problem with their boosted engines. Honda & Toyota,you can find them used at a fair price and they are hard to kill. I have to agree, most european cars have poor resale value because they are not cheap to keep running. They tend to have the same reliability as an american car, but without the benefit of cheap parts and labor.

+1 on this. European cars are notorious for expensive replacement parts, and they are generally not as reliable as Japanese cars.

My dad has a 94 Escort Wagon he picked up with 12k original miles a couple years back and it has been great we have put over 60k on it since having it and it drives great. Plenty of room. 26-29 in city and 30-37 on interstate.
