  • Running on original engine

I've had my festiva for about a month. Love it so far. But through this site and others I have seen lots of engine swaps. I have an 89 automatic and it is still running strong on its original engine. The odom says 248k. I hear they don't last long. I'm about to do a tune up in the next few days. Any thoughts? Should I consider a engine swap or do you think it will last a while longer? The previous owner had it 11 years and loved it and seems to have tooken care of it.

Don't last long? You must be thinking of Geo Metros.

It is routine for these engine to easily hit 300k miles, and really well taken car of ones have been known to hit 400k miles.

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

If you're really worried, keep your eyes open for a nice price on a good used engine. Then buy it, prep it, and keep it on hand.

Problem solved, whether there is a problem or not!

Same goes for any other parts...if you see a good price, buy them. Better yet, buy a parts car!

Don't worry. I get all the Festivas that are about to go bang.

Nearly everyone I've ever talked to has given good feedback about these engines, if they've had one.
Any difference that makes no difference is no difference.

It all depends on the previous owner and if the engine leaked oil and they let it run dry multiple times. I have one engine that's on its 3rd chassis and doesn't use oil (I rebuilt the head thats it) and I have no idea how many miles it actually has.But I can go 6K easily before it needs any oil.Consequently I've bought used engines installed them only to have them fail in short order. It all come down to the previous owners preventive maintenance program. But a well prepped and maintained B3 engine imo will last 500-750K no BS. Someone has been giving you bad info. And on a side note if you get an ignorant mechanic that only likes Honda's he is going to bad mouth your car. Also because you have an automatic I would HIGHLY suggest you get the fluid & filter changed asap. These trannys are amazingly durable so take care of it. ie make sure it has the correct level of clean fluid and it will literally last forever.Nitro-
