  • Hydro G series info Q's

So a hydro G series seems to be more plentiful around here rather than its XR2 cable counterpart, but I have a few questions.

Quoting the Club Protege B series swap FAQ:
"The Protege LX, Escort GT & LX-E and Tracer LTS all have G-series transmissions. These transmissions are used in numerous Mazdas including all 2.0 4-cylinder & 2.5 V6 MX-3, MX-6, 626, Ford Probe and 01+ Protege's."

" you will need to get the axles, intermediate shaft from a 90-94 Protege LX, 92-94 MX-3 GS or 91-96 Ford Escort GT/LX-E or Tracer LTS."

    1) So am I correct to assume that if say I got my g series out of a ford probe, I would still be in need of escort gt/xr2 axles/intermediate shaft?

    2) Are the automatic and manual axles and intermediate shaft the same or do I have to get the axles out of a manual car?

    3) Will I be able to use whichever flywheel/clutch is attached to the engine from any of the previous cars, or will it have to be from specifically, the xr2/escort gt?

    4) Are there any good guides/explanations to making the hydraulic adapter/how it works for the clutch?

    Thanks in advance.
    Tommy

You cant use a probe g series with a b series engine unless you swap bell housings. You can't run BG chassis (escort/protege/traced) axles in a Festiva without serious modification. You need Capri Xr2 axles (with I.M. shaft) or possibly kia Rio axles (without I.M. shaft).

If you are using a probe V6 tranny, you'll also have to change your differential.

So basically, I have to get Capri axles with the IM shaft. Could you elaborate more on the rio axles? what year to look for etc.

Then, for the transmission, im limited to trannys that are strapped to a B series engine. Probably something with a bp in it, other than the XR2. Anything else to mention?

Out of that article, I got that all fod escort cars have g transmission. That would bolt up to the b motor

The G-series transmission can be found in bigger B-engine mazda powered cars, like the 88-89 Mazda 323GT, 1992-1993 Ford Escort LX-E, 1991-1996 Ford Escort GT, 1991-1996 Mercury Tracer LTS, 1990-1994 Mazda Protégé LX, and the Mercury Capri XR2. The G-series transmission can also be found attached to K-series mazda cars, but these transmissions have different bell housing because they are attached to a V6. The 323 GT and the Capri XR2 use a cable clutch, while the rest of these cars use a hydraulic clutch. The G-series has a 22-tooth input shaft spline count, and accepts 26 tooth splined axles. The G-series transmissions use a jackshaft/intermediate shaft.
For axles, you will need the axles and the intermediate shaft from either a 1988-1989 Mazda 323 GT, or from a 1991-1994 Capri XR2.
These cars only came as manuals, so automatic axles aren't even an option

I'm not sure about automatic axles. I remember hearing that automatic festiva axles work in a manual F series, but I have not tried this. BP cars (escort GT and protege lx) came in automatic, but those axles will be to long and have the wrong outer cv joint/axle spline for any hubs that are commonly used in a Festiva. I'm not sure which Kia rio axles you'll need. The Rio does not have an IM shaft, and I have heard of people using them as an easy BP swap solution because the Capri xr2/323GT IM shaft doesn't bolt directly up to the BP block.

Yes, you can use the BP clutch or a B6t clutch. The flywheels are different, but compatible with each other. You can also use a BP Miata (NB) flywheel. You can't use Miata BP pressure plate without modification, but the disks are swappable. My b6t car has a Mazda motorsport development clutch from a BP miata in it, but I had to machine the diaphragm spring a bit to fit the g series throwout tube. These cars are very universal. The 4 cylinder probe/mx6/626 clutch pressure plate and disk will fit the EGT/Protege lx/ capri xr2 tranny.

626/mx6/probe 4 cylinder inner CV joints work on capri xr2/323 gt axles and are easier to find if you are rebuilding axles.

That is all I know about this stuff. Hope it helps.

False. Only the BF chassis Escort GT has a B series compatible transmission. The base model Escort and the first gen GT have Ford engine that has a different bell housing bolt pattern.

1 - no, you must you Capri XR2/323 GT axle set with any G series transmission in a festiva, any other axles won't work

2 - same answer as number one, manual transmission only

3 - keep the matching flywheel to the transmission you choose

4 - not really but I've done a hydro conversion and can help you out with it

Bringing this up because I have some more g series questions.

When using rio axles, am I using both rio, passenger rio, then driver xr2, or something else?

Im also looking for clutch and flywheel recommendations if anyone wants to post links. or better someone send me a CHEAP g series clutch and flywheel.

I cant think of anything else right now, im sure ill remember something. thanks.

Passenger Rio axle. XR2 drivers. The Rio axle is simply to bypass the need for the XR2 intermediate shaft.

Rio drivers axle might work. I don't know.
