Mazda also made small diesel engines based on the B series block iirc. That might be a better option than the TDI.

Man Mazda had some awesome diesels sadly they're pretty rare couldn't find one for sale shame a mzr high power wouldve been perfect 190 hp 300 lbs 55mpg (in a sedan)

A mzr/duratec is also a possible swap. They used versions of the g series transmission also. Not sure if it'll physically fit in the engine bay though.

For your purpose, you wouldn't want the MZR turbo engine. It would be useless on street tires. You can find a D20 for cheap from a focus. Plenty of TQ for a Festy and it's a reliable engine. My D23 Ranger is not a powerhouse as a truck, but it tugs a pretty heavy trailer around and it's a lot heavier than a Festy.

Dig around on club protege. I think there are some guys in Puerto Rico that are running 10s in mzr swapped 323s.
